The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a worldwide program of the World Health Organization and UNICEF, launched in 1991 following the Innocenti Declaration of 1990. It is a global eort for improving the role of maternity services to enable mothers to breastfeed babies for the best start in life. It aims at improving the care of pregnant
women, mothers and newborns at health facilities that provide maternity services
for protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, in accordance with the
Malaysian Code of Ethics for the Marketing of Infant Foods and Related Products and the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. Health facilities that meet this criteria can apply for accreditation as a Baby Friendly
Hospital. Good quality training is crucial to ensure that those involved with caring for mothers
and babies have the skills and knowledge to ensure best practice around
breastfeeding is implemented. The Baby Friendly Initiative provides a variety of courses, workshops and teaching aids to support health professionals as they work towards the stages to full accreditation. All training products have been developed by our team of experienced Baby Friendly Initiative tutors and assessors, and are specically designed to help participants achieve the high standard of practice required in Baby
Friendly health-care facilities. They are evidence-based and accompanied by
comprehensive workbooks and other materials.
