SURGICAL RETREAT , 28th-30th September 2025

The Department of Surgery successfully organized a Surgery Retreat Program aimed at enhancing professional development, strengthening teamwork, and outlining strategic directions for the department. The retreat was attended by consultants, specialists, medical officers, trainees, and allied health staff.

Pembedahan robotik evolusi kesihatan masa depan

Robotic surgery represents an advanced evolution of minimally invasive surgery, offering improved precision and patient outcomes, but its accessibility is limited by cost and availability.

Hospital Pakar USM dan Pusat Pengajian Sains Perubatan USM membuka era baru ke arah menerajui teknologi pembedahan robotik, di Pantai Timur Semenanjung Malaysia.

Sistem Pembedahan robotik ini membolehkan pakar bedah melakukan pembedahan kompleks dan rekonstruktif dengan hirisan kecil, selain meningkatkan visualisasi, ketepatan dan kawalan sepanjang proses pembedahan.

Dua pakar kolorektal kami iaitu Prof Zaidi (sekarang sebagai Timb Pengarah Klinikal ) dan Prof Andee (Penyelaras Fasa III MD USM ) telah mendapat pendedahan awal berkenaan pembedahan robotik ini di bawal seliaan Prof Kim semasa latihan mereka di Korea beberapa tahun sblm ini .

Dalam satu majlis pada 23 September 2025 di Bilik Mesyuarat Pengarah HPUSM yang dipengerusikan oleh Pengarah HPUSM Prof Dato Dr Ab. Rahman Izaini satu resolusi telah dinyatakan .

Pembentangan juga dihadiri wakil dari Jabatan Anestesiologi, O&G , unit Urologi dan Ortopedik

Vascular Anastomosis Workshop VASCAN 5.0

Our 5th Edition of Vascular Anastomosis Workshop was held on 8th and 9th September 2025 at skill lab and operation theatre . This workshop aimed at enhancing participants’ knowledge and technical skills in vascular surgery , mainly for our master of medicine (General Surgery) students . The program included lectures on principles of vascular anastomosis, pre and postop assessment and complications, followed by hands-on practice end-to-side n ETE anastomosis using simulation model and real patients.

Today marks a significant milestone for the HPB and Coloractal team at USM — the ICG guided laparoscopic liver resection for liver metastasis from re**al adenocarcinoma!

The patient underwent a combined procedure: Laparoscopic Low Anterior Resection with Covering Ileostomy and a Laparoscopic Non-Anatomical Liver Resection, all in a single surgical setting.

The surgical team was led by Mr. Azem (HPB Trainee), Assoc Prof Ikhwan Sani (HPB consultant) Prof. Zaidee (Colore**al Consultant ), and Mr. Soma (Colore**al Trainee) and mmed students.

Indocyanine Green (ICG) was administered a day prior, and laparoscopic ultrasound guidance was utilized before proceeding with the resection.

Alhamdulillah, the procedure was smooth and uneventful.
Thank you all other diciplines n unit that make this surgery successful.
