She was written off after a low score on her MMSE. People tend to give up on her because she no longer performs on command. But what if we took a different approach?
This morning, we started off by taking a slow stroll through the park, followed by a quiet breakfast where she led the conversation. When the time felt right, I introduced numbers as a friendly, cosy game. From counting to twenty, we moved to writing. Then we moved from simple puzzles to more complex ones. She managed to solve them all. Once she was calm and relaxed and warmed up to certain activities, she had no trouble participating and completing them.
We are no miracle workers. We were simply present with her and shared her rhythm. By listening to her tempo and letting her lead, we built a sense of confidence that no clinical assessment could measure. When we stop demanding performance and start offering connection, we become the bridge that dementia cannot cross. We must not give up.
