1. Even though heartburn and GERD start in your stomach, they arenโ€™t necessarily caused by food. Other factors, like being overweight or smoking can lead to heartburn.

2. Peppermint may soothe an upset stomach, but it can also make heartburn worse. The same peppermint side effect that helps soothe your stomach also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing stomach contents to leak up into your esophagus.

3. A hiatal hernia is a surprising cause of heartburn. A hiatal hernia is when part of the stomach squeezes up through the muscle wall (diaphragm) that normally keeps it in place.

4. Smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke can cause heartburn. To***co smoke makes your LES relax, allowing stomach contents to leak up into your esophagus.

5. Heartburn can cause breathing problems. It can cause hoarseness, sore throat, coughing, asthma, a need to clear your throat, and overproduction of mucus in your throat.

6. Sleeping on your left side can ease nighttime heartburn symptoms. Raising the head of your bed can also help.

7. Heartburn is a known side effect of many common medications, including some for blood pressure, asthma, allergies, depression, anxiety, and erectile dysfunction.

8. Tight clothing can cause heartburn. Anything that squeezes your abdomen can push stomach acid up into your esophagus.

9. If you donโ€™t feel the burn but have a chronic cough, sound hoarse, clear your throat a lot, and feel like you have a lump in your throat frequently, you may have throatburn reflux, also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).

10. Chronic irritation from heartburn and GERD can damage the lining of your esophagus, a condition called Barrrettโ€™s esophagus. If not treated, it can lead to esophageal cancer.

11. GERD doesnโ€™t just wake you up with heartburn. Sometimes, it can cause you to breathe in stomach acid in your sleep and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea. This discomfort can disrupt your entire sleep cycle. The negative impact to your sleep can be serious. A lack of quality sleep can affect your brain function, daytime functioning, emotional and physical health.

12. Chewing gum after a meal can reduce heartburn by increasing your need to swallow, which helps to reduce reflux. But not mint gum; menthol used to flavor mint gum can cause heartburn.

13. Acid reflux can harm your teeth and gums (and can cause bad breath). In fact, the acid can harm nearly anything it touches.

14. Sinus pain and headaches are some of the more surprising (and rare) symptoms of heartburn.

GERD isnโ€™t life-threatening or dangerous in itself. But long-term GERD can lead to more serious health problems:

The damage acid reflux can cause over years can change the cells in the lining of the esophagus. Barrettโ€™s esophagus is a risk factor for cancer of the esophagus.

โ€ข ๐—˜๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ: Cancer that begins in the esophagus is divided into two major types. Adenocarcinoma usually develops in the lower part of the esophagus. This type can develop from Barrettโ€™s esophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma begins in the cells that line the esophagus. This cancer usually affects the upper and middle part of the esophagus.

โ€ข ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€: Sometimes the damaged lining of the esophagus becomes scarred, causing narrowing of the esophagus. These strictures can interfere with eating and drinking by preventing food and liquid from reaching the stomach.

Different people are affected in different ways by GERD. The most common symptoms are:

โ€ข Regurgitation (food comes back into your mouth from the esophagus).

This is not always true. Vegetarians are at higher risk for deficiency due to the fact that less iron is absorbed from plants. However, vegetarians who pay close attention to their diet intake and arenโ€™t of child-bearing age may be fine.

Other vegetarians, especially men, are probably adequate in iron.

A vegetarian diet may be very beneficial for a person with a disorder called hemochromatosis.

However, if a vegetarian has any of the risk factors (listed in previous posts) , they certainly may need supplemental iron.

๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง, which sounds like it would be the best marker for iron level, unfortunately only gives an indication of the iron circulating in the blood โ€“ this is basically a marker of what we have eaten in last 24h and does not give an accurate reflection of iron stores (and can even be high despite having iron deficiency).

On the other hand, ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐…๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง (a reflection of the iron stores) is recognized as the most accurate test and best indicator for determining iron deficiency.

In case of an ongoing inflammation or infection, ๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (% Fe saturation), is a more reliable indicator as serum ferritin levels might be artificially increased. This is basically the ratio of the iron in the blood (measured by serum iron) and the total iron binding capacity.

Determining Iron deficiency should consist of a good examination of medical experts and with lab results especially Serum ferritin level with Serum Iron and Iron Saturation, which helps to accurately tailor the treatment plans for each patient.

If you are a female of reproductive age, have had children, and have a โ€œnormal to heavy flowโ€ for a period, you probably are NOT getting enough iron in your diet, even if you eat meat.

In contrast, the iron in seafood and meats are absorbed much more readily, but it still isnโ€™t a sure bet.

The absorption of iron is a tightly regulated system in our body, and genes affect how much you will or wonโ€™t absorb as well.
