Back Pain During Pregnancy
Low back pain is very common during pregnancy. About 50% -70% of pregnant women experience it at some stage. Majority of the pain is directly due to musculoskeletal in nature but there are some may be caused by more serious underlying problems. Always refer to your trusted medical practitioner if you suffering from a sudden acute back pain.
Common Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy
1. Lumbar Spine Strain – Occurs to the muscles, disc, joints or ligaments around the lumbar spine region. This may be due to the weakness (or tightness), poor posture and heavy lifting. But most commonly is due to the increase in lordosis (forward curvature) of the lumbar spine during pregnancy.
2. Sacro-Iliac Joint Pain – To prepare the body for childbirth, the hormone relaxin causes the ligaments around the Sacro-iliac (SI) joint to become relax. Relaxation of the ligaments holding the joint together will increase the motion of the joint and at the same time causing weakness and abnormal wear and tear to it.
3. Sciatica – Sciatica is a common term to describe a shooting pain from the back through the buttock down to the leg. This is due to nerve compression by the disc or muscle spasm.
How to Prevent and Manage Back Pain During Pregnancy:
1. Stretching – Help to reduce muscular spasm during pregnancy and increase joint and ligament flexibility for the birth process.
2. 2. Exercise – Walking is probably the best exercise when it comes to back pain prevention. It is recommended to slowly adapt to walk about 20-30 minutes a day even before pregnancy. Swimming is another great exercise that can give you an overall body workout without stressing your joints.
3. Good Posture – A bulging pregnant belly increases the weight to your spine and making the muscles short and tight. Standing straight will help to lengthen the back muscles. Sitting and walking in a good posture can make a huge difference in reducing your pregnancy back pain.
4. Sleeping with pillow support – Sleeping on your side with a pillow support on your tummy may help to reduce back pain.
5. Acupuncture – Using fine sterilized needles on your meridian points to activate your body’s own pain relief signals. Always look for a trusted and qualified registered acupuncturist.
6. Chiropractic – Numerous studies have found that chiropractic adjustment is one of the safest and most effective treatments for low back pain before, during and after pregnancy.
