Cancer Research Malaysia

Cancer Research Malaysia Dedicated to Saving Asian Lives through impactful research. Your donation saves lives Today, we are a 40-strong team of researchers.

Cancer Research Malaysia was incorporated as company limited by guarantee in June 2000 with the support and donation from these key individuals and organisations: Tan Sri Azizan and Tan Sri Hassan Merican (PETRONAS), Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Mrs Leong Lim Siew Lian (Genting) and Lembaga Totalisator Malaysia. The Cancer Research Malaysia laboratory was established in Sime Darby Medical Centre (then known as Subang Jaya Medical Centre) in Jan 2001. With just a temporary laboratory of 700 sq ft and only 6 scientists, the first months were focused on establishing collaborations to begin Malaysian cancer research. In August 2002, Cancer Research Malaysia moved into a custom-made facility provided rent-free by Sime Darby Medical Centre and Cancer Research Malaysia was officially launched by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in October 2002. At the core is a series of programmes based upon areas of strategic importance to Malaysian cancer research: focusing on cancers which are more common in Asians and understudied (such as oral and nasopharyngeal cancer), focusing on finding ways to reduce the burden of common cancers such as breast cancer, focusing on genetic and environmental risk factors in Asians, and focusing on Malaysia’s rich biodiversity in search for a cure for cancer.

A vaccine against cancer, could this be our future? πŸ’‰πŸ§¬

⭐ Dr Lim Kue Peng, Head of Cancer Immunology & Immunotherapy, shares how cancer vaccines could work alongside existing cancer treatments, not just to treat cancer, but to potentially prevent it from coming back.

At Cancer Research Malaysia, we focus on research rooted in Asian biology to advance people-centred, compassionate cancer care for generations to come.

This World Cancer Day , let's make sure the fight against cancer doesn't stop at today’s patients, but protect's tomorrow's too.

What does it take to move cancer research forward, every single day? πŸ”¬βœ¨

πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ For Ms Yee Pei San, Senior Research Associate from the Translational Cancer Biology Unit, it starts before sunrise. From coffee-fuelled mornings to back-to-back team discussions, she dives into hands-on lab work with cancer cells to answer the big scientific questions that matter.

Her work focuses on better treatments for cancers affecting Malaysians, so cancer care can be more people-centred, compassionate and inclusive.

Though we’re all unique in our stories, the fight against cancer is strongest when we stand united this World Cancer Day .

Reversing cancer

Cancer Research Malaysia is a non-profit medical research organisation working to reverse cancer in as many ways as we can. In the world of cancer research, there isn’t enough focus on Asian genetics and the cancers more common here. First established as Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation by Tan Sri Tunku Ahmad Yahaya and Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong, we changed our name to Cancer Research Malaysia in 2015 to reflect that we are no longer just an initiative, but we are here to ensure that the fight against cancer doesn't miss Asians, especially Malaysians. Our laboratory was established in Subang Jaya Medical Centre in Jan 2001. With just a temporary laboratory of 700 sq ft and only 6 scientists, the first months were focused on establishing collaborations to begin Malaysian cancer research. Today, we are a 50-plus strong team of researchers. At the core is a series of programmes based upon areas of strategic importance to Malaysian cancer research: focusing on cancers which are more common in Asians and understudied (such as oral and nasopharyngeal cancer), focusing on finding ways to reduce the burden of common cancers such as breast cancer, focusing on genetic and environmental risk factors in Asians, and focusing on bringing cures to Malaysians sooner.
