Learning difficulties can lead to severe n profound behaviour problems in teenagers....

Parents MUST be held accountable n responsible for their children's behaviour under the age of 18. The lack of monitoring, the lack communication, the lack of a "relationship" leads to catastrophic outcomes...

On situation Level 1:
1) lack of emotional intelligence(stems from modelling by parents)
2) positive conflict resolution (modelled by parents)
3) ability to manage negative feedback in a positive n constructive way (modelled by parents)
4) to have an open easy n consistent relationship with parents, who continously check in and provide guidance opportunity for discussion at home vs "have u done ur homework?" "How many A's did u get?" "What??? Failed again?? Ur lazy!" Instead of thinking poor grades and the lack of healthy peer friendship are OK! Denying the possibility of a learning problem, a social communication problem..so common here.

On situation Level 2:
1) Reacting to information with empathy and understanding ( modelled by parents)
2) Conflict resolution- taking in information, seeking time to reflect, seeking help from adults to resolve conflict with empathy and understanding by honest discussion of situation faced
3) Parental acceptance n understanding of raising teenagers n putting situation in context
4) Communicating feelings n thoughts in a positive way (again learnt from parental modelling)

Who is REALLY to blame here? In my opinion it is 2 lives lost...really...why?
It was easier to allow gaming n not focussing on intra relationship building in the family, to facilitate open communication that ultimately led to this dreadful tragedy..

I have clients who told me they feel its better NOT to discuss it with their own kids... when IT SHOULD BE as a PRIORITY....
My Opinion: if you dont want to take responsibility as parents for your children, then please, just don't have children la!

I feel that what has happened in the last 2 weeks(rape n now murder) is a stark call for parents to evaluate their parenting styles and taking responsibility for failure to be decent parents. NOT knowing your child is NOT an excuse..its negligent parenting. "Zero communication, respecting privacy of a minor's internet access" are all excuses I have heard and have let parents' I work with, know, I disagree with. Now 2 tragedies,death, n living lives ruined forever... because parents want to adopt 1st world parenting styles in a nation that has a 3rd world mentality....look where that has got us....
