Pillar

Pillar Pillar is a family of trusted providers offering the best in elderly care at home. An online platform that helps get your loved ones the care they deserve.

Our founders were in Kuala Lumpur, working together in the local healthcare space. It so happened that the street on which we lived had a lot of elderly people. They were all very kind and gentle, but rather lonely. They had few others to rely on for the simple things, since their loved ones were working overseas or in other parts r of the country. We regularly kept them company, helped them run small errands, and listened to their inspiring life stories. But we were only going to be there for a short while. This made us think of our own ageing parents and that they were almost in the same situation. As people start to live longer, they need others to care for them. And, all while wishing to age gracefully in their own homes. What we know in Asia is that traditional values of filial piety (a virtue of respect for one's parents, elders, and ancestors) is changing. Children are working harder and longer, and there is no time to look after parents but they try anyway

Pillar supports these hard working children who are trying their best to keep traditional values whilst trying to earn a living to support their families. This gave rise to the idea of Pillar. Others in home care start when the seniors are ill and the children are already at wits end trying to cope. Pillar supports the children right from the most minor things such as home cleaning, shopping and feeding, all the way through complex medical assistance. Pillar is the missing piece of the puzzle of modern ageing--a technology-backed service that connects seniors and their families with caregivers for a more affordable and efficient service. Pillar helps people grow old with dignity, no matter what their personal or health situation is. At home. Pillar Founders

Finding the Right Caregiver for Your Loved One

Choosing an in-home caregiver for your elderly loved one is a significant decision and one that requires careful consideration. To ensure peace of mind and the best care possible, there are essential questions you should ask any potential caregiver before making your choice. Here are some key inquiries you might consider:

1. Experience and Qualifications: Ask about their background in caregiving. How long have they worked in this field, and what kind of training or certifications do they possess? It's vital to understand their expertise and if they have experience with specific health conditions relevant to your loved one.

2. Care Philosophy: Every caregiver has a unique approach to care. Ask them how they view their role. What does compassionate care mean to them? Understanding their philosophy can help ensure that their values align with your expectations.

3. Availability and Flexibility: Discuss scheduling upfront. Are they available for the hours you need? Can they accommodate last-minute changes due to emergencies or health fluctuations?

4. Communication: Communication is key in providing effective care. Ask how they prefer to stay in touch with family members. Do they provide regular updates on your loved one’s condition or progress?

5. Handling Emergencies: It's crucial to know how the caregiver would respond in an emergency. What protocols do they follow? Do they have first aid training? This knowledge can provide reassurance that your loved one will be in safe hands.

6. Personal Interests: Understanding the caregiver’s interests can help you determine whether they will engage your loved one in activities that bring them joy. Ask about hobbies and how they plan to build a rapport with your family member.

Finding the best caregiver for your loved one may feel overwhelming, but Pillar is here to help! Our platform connects families with dedicated Care Heroes tailored to fit specific needs.

Preparing your loved one for live-in care

The economics and logic of bringing a caregiver into the home make sense. But that doesn’t always make it easy. That’s especially true when caregiving moves to the full-time, 24-hour per day situation. However, the more prepared clients and their families are, the easier the transition will be.

There are many emotions experienced as you and/or a loved one prepare for a caregiver to move in full-time. On one hand, you may experience a sense of relief and greater security–a burden has been lifted. On the other hand, it can feel stressful and like an invasion of privacy to have a stranger move in, particularly when this stranger may not have come from the same culture or background as you and your family. These feelings are further compounded if you live in a multi-generational home, and the caregiver will be moving into your family’s space to care for your loved one.

The good news is that this stranger will soon be a comfortable and caring addition to your home, providing helpful services, compassion, and care that will ease the burden for you, your family, and your loved one who needs care.

Take small steps toward having a full-time caregiver if possible

If your loved one has an illness, is in the beginning stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, you may have a little time on your hands before 24-hour care is required. If this is true, you can take small steps into caregiving by hiring a caregiver to come in a few times a week, for a few hours each day. During this time, the caregiver and client can get to know one another, and familiarize themselves with preferences, routines, item placement, grocery lists, meal requests–basically all of your loved one’s “activities of daily living.”

Communicate clearly and honestly

While mutual respect is expected and hoped for between the family/loved one and the caregiver, there is no need for a client to feel as if he or she needs to put on “polite manners.” In fact, doing this can lead to misunderstandings or unexpressed feelings that may cause trouble later on. It’s always best to be 100% clear about your expectations, needs, requests, and preferences. Also, state your concerns, fears, and discomfort concerning a situation. Some of these topics may be addressed during your consultation with the caregiving company you have hired. However, we recommend taking time to create a list that you update often with no items, thoughts or concerns considered too small or petty.

When you’re ready, go over your list with the assigned caregiver so you are all on the same page. If done honestly and thoroughly, this one step can alleviate a tremendous amount of stress, anxiety, and miscommunication.

Clearly outline all of the “house rules” and the expectations of the caregiver. Are there restrictions on television usage, volume levels, personal phone calls, mobile phone usage, Internet use, lights out, and so on? Everyone’s house rules are different, and they vary from culture to culture. So, setting clear expectations from the outset minimizes conflicts along the way.

Write a detailed day-to-day (month-to-month) schedule

In the weeks leading up to having a full-time caregiver in your home, create a written list of your daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. Clients are often unaware of how set their routine is until someone moves and changes things around. Create a schedule that replicates how things are currently done so the caregiver can emulate that routine as much as possible. The same is true for weekly, monthly, and seasonal interests, activities, and events. Also include things like:

* Important contact information (family, friends, neighbors, physicians, specialists, pharmacy)
* Dietary restrictions/preferences
* Weekly events and activities
* Allergies
* Medication schedule
* Other important information, facts, and interesting personal information about your loved one

Secure sensitive and valuable family items and documents

Your caregiver should be thoroughly vetted by the company, including a complete background check. Even so, it’s a good idea to secure any sensitive/private/valuable items in locked cabinets, an in-home safe, or with a nearby loved one.

Create a private, comfortable place for the caregiver

In a perfect world, caregivers would have their own private space, such as a bedroom, but this isn’t always possible. If not, create a private, comfortable space where the caregiver can get his or her full, 8-hours of sleep each night or day.

The caregiver will be investing considerable time and energy into their work. Just as it isn’t easy to have someone move into your home, it’s not always easy to live away from one’s own home, or to get a good night’s sleep in another home and bed, so take that into consideration when preparing your caregiver’s space. Your consideration for making the caregiver feel welcome and comfortable will be greatly appreciated.

Consider some minor details that make for a smoother transition

Once you’ve gone through the major checklist of items with the caregiver, there are some things you also do to help the transition and facilitate a healthy, day-to-day relationship. Consider things such as:

* Purchasing a baby monitor, the caregiver can use it outside or in their own space so they can hear their loved one wake up or call for assistance.
* Create a pantry, cabinet, and/or drawer space in the kitchen. These spaces and/or shelves should be labeled, offering the caregiver a place to store their own food, beverages, and snack items.
* Get a notebook that the caregiver can use as a daily log, noting anything unusual or special that happens each day. This helps to keep the caregiver in tune with the client as needs and preferences change. Some changes in your loved one may also be a sign that medical attention is needed. These daily logs are especially helpful in multi-generational households where there is a regular flow of family members and the caregiver.

Understanding the Differences Between Nursing Home Care and Home Caregiving

As we navigate the complexities of caregiving, it’s essential to understand the differences between nursing home care and home caregiving. Each option has its unique benefits, and the right choice largely depends on individual needs and circumstances.

**Nursing Home Care** is typically suited for seniors who require comprehensive medical support and assistance with daily activities, but may not be able to live independently. These facilities provide round-the-clock medical supervision, skilled nursing services, and a structured environment that caters to the complex needs of residents. Nursing homes can be beneficial for individuals with serious health issues, advanced dementia, or those recovering from major surgeries who require specialized care that cannot be provided at home.

On the other hand, **Home Caregiving** allows seniors to remain in the comfort of their own homes while receiving the support they need. This option is ideal for individuals who may need assistance with daily activities such as bathing, meal preparation, and medication management but have not reached a level of care that necessitates constant medical supervision. Home caregivers can assist part-time or full-time, offering companionship and a sense of independence while ensuring safety and comfort in a familiar environment.

When deciding between nursing home care and home caregiving, consider the level of assistance required and the individual’s comfort. It’s also vital to assess the safety of the home environment, the availability of family support, and the financial implications of each option.

At Pillar, we understand that this decision can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to help. Not only do we provide exceptional home caregiving services tailored to meet the unique needs of our clients, but we can also refer clients to quality nursing homes that prioritize personalized care and comfort. Our goal is to ensure that every individual receives the right care that respects their preferences and improves their quality of life.

Ultimately, choosing between nursing home care and home caregiving is a deeply personal decision. By understanding the strengths of each option and seeking guidance, you can make an informed choice that best supports your loved one’s well-being.

If you have any questions or need assistance exploring your options, please reach out to us at Pillar. We’re here to support you every step of the way!

Supporting Dementia Patients at Home: The Role of Our Dedicated Caregivers

As we navigate the complexities of dementia care, we are proud to highlight the invaluable contributions of our dedicated caregivers. Their unwavering support and compassionate approach enable individuals living with dementia to maintain their dignity and quality of life in the comfort of their own homes.

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be challenging, but our caregivers bring not only expertise but also a deep understanding of the nuances of this condition. They are trained to recognize the unique needs of each patient, allowing them to tailor their approach to foster a sense of safety, security, and well-being.

One of the most impactful ways our caregivers assist is through meaningful engagement. They encourage activities that stimulate cognitive function and promote emotional well-being, such as reminiscing, arts and crafts, or gentle physical exercises. These activities not only help to keep the mind active but also create moments of joy and connection, which are crucial in maintaining a positive outlook on life.

In addition to providing companionship, our caregivers offer practical support with daily tasks. This may include assistance with meal preparation, personal hygiene, and medication management. By ensuring that these tasks are handled with care and compassion, we help our clients navigate their daily routines with confidence, reducing feelings of frustration and anxiety that often accompany dementia.

Our caregivers are also trained to recognize and respond to the behavioral and emotional challenges that may arise. Through patience and understanding, they help to de-escalate situations and provide reassurance when needed. This not only enhances the well-being of our clients but also provides peace of mind to family members, knowing that their loved ones are in capable hands.

Moreover, our caregivers play a vital role in family support. They serve as a bridge between medical professionals and family members, ensuring that everyone is informed and engaged in the care process. This holistic approach fosters a supportive environment that allows families to navigate the complexities of dementia together.

Our caregivers are the heart and soul of our mission to help dementia patients live well at home. Their compassionate care transforms lives, allowing individuals to retain their independence and experience fulfillment. Together, we can create a supportive community that uplifts everyone affected by dementia. 💖

If you’re interested in learning more about our services or how we can assist you or a loved one, please feel free to reach out to us. Let's continue working together to make a difference!

Tips for Hiring a Caregiver

Hiring a caregiver is a significant decision that demands careful consideration and a systematic approach. Whether for an elderly family member, a friend with a disability, or even oneself, selecting the right caregiver ensures that the individual receives the necessary assistance in a safe and compassionate environment. This essay outlines essential steps to effectively hire a caregiver.

The first step in the hiring process is to identify the specific needs of the individual requiring care. Understanding the level of assistance needed, including personal care, companionship, medical support, or household tasks, enables one to define the qualifications and skills required of a caregiver. For example, individuals with complex medical needs may require a caregiver with specialized training or medical experience, while those needing companionship may prioritize interpersonal skills over medical expertise.

Once the needs are clearly articulated, the next step involves searching for potential caregivers. This can be accomplished through various channels, including referrals from friends, family, or medical professionals, as well as online platforms that specialize in caregiver services. Professional caregiving agencies can also provide a reliable source of vetted caregivers. When engaging with an agency, inquire about their hiring practices, training programs, and background check processes to ensure the caregivers are properly qualified.

After compiling a list of candidates, it is imperative to conduct rigorous interviews. The interview process should encompass open-ended questions that allow candidates to express their experiences, motivations, and approaches to caregiving. Additionally, assess their compatibility with the individual needing care, as a strong rapport is crucial for effective caregiving.

During this stage, it is also essential to discuss practical matters, such as availability, payment structure, and any additional responsibilities expected of the caregiver.

Furthermore, conducting background checks and verifying references is crucial in securing a trustworthy caregiver.

Lastly, ongoing evaluation of the caregiver’s performance is critical. Regular check-ins with both the caregiver and the individual receiving care can help identify any changing needs and ensure that the quality of service remains high. This continuous assessment creates an environment where both parties feel supported and valued, fostering a positive caregiving experience.

How Caregivers Can Help the Elderly Facing Death and Their Families

There are many things caregivers do to help elderly patients facing death. Some of these things include helping the patients to make choices about how they want to die, being there for them during the dying process, and providing support after the patient dies.

One of the most important things caregivers can do is make sure the elderly patient is comfortable and relaxed. This can be done by providing them with adequate pain relief and support during the dying process. In addition, caregivers should keep in mind the patient's wishes and take them into account when providing care.

It is also important to be there for elderly patients during the dying process. This can include providing emotional support, listening to them, and being there for them when they need it. After the elderly patient dies, it is important to provide them with a respectful and dignified funeral.

Caregivers can make a big impact on the lives of elderly patients facing death by providing them with the support they need during the dying process, and after they die.

1. Care for the patient and their family as if they will be staying with the family for a long time.
2. Allow the family to have privacy and time to grieve in their own way.
3. Help the family get in touch with the person’s care team and others involved in the patient’s care.
4. Offer emotional support, assistance with decision-making, and practical assistance such as coordinating end-of-life care.
5. Try to be available to speak with the family in their own language and in a way they understand.
6. Assist with the funeral arrangements and help to make the grieving process as smooth as possible.
7. Offer to accompany the family to religious services, vigils, and any other gatherings that might be helpful.
8. Serve as a source of support and information for the family in the weeks, months, and years following the patient’s death.
9. Encourage the family to take pride in the person’s life and accomplishments, and to remember the times they had together.
10. Be available to answer any questions the family might have, and to provide any resources they might need.

Together, let’s continue to make a positive impact in our community!

Our Story

Children are working harder and longer, and there is no time to look after parents but they try anyway Pillar supports these hard working children who are trying their best to keep traditional values whilst trying to earn a living to support their families.
