I first ventured into aged care in 1995 to help a friend who had lost their caregiving job, but the business ended due to poor partnerships. After working in maternity care and advocating for vulnerable babies, I felt a strong calling to return to aged care someday.

In 2016, with the right partner, I revived that dream and started again—this time determined to be hands-on with residents every day.

Dr Rema and I personally oversee both medical and rehabilitation decisions, ensuring continuous, high-quality care. This personal, family-like approach has become the defining feature of Vida and the key to its success.

I’ve had many touching moments with patients at Vida, but one Aunty stays in my heart. She once shared that her relationship with her immediate family wasn’t good, but her siblings still came to visit and check on her. It reminded me that no matter how hard life gets, there are always people who care.

She used to tell me to keep a good relationship with my own siblings. Even though she could be difficult at times, I knew she was kind inside — just carrying a lot of pain. From her, I learned to look beyond someone’s attitude and see the heart behind it.

It was such a lovely surprise to see Aunty Lan, who usually spends her days in quiet meditation, softly singing along to Teresa Teng’s timeless classic "The Moon Represents My Heart" – 月亮代表我的心.

She rarely speaks, but today, her voice carried the emotion of the song so gently, it felt like time stood still. A reminder that music truly speaks where words sometimes can’t.

Do I love being a Caregiver?

Of course I do — especially because I get to interact with the seniors every day. Many of them tell me they miss their home, but they also understand that their children need to work and there would be no one at home to look after them. Here, they are cared for around the clock. Their meals are prepared, their clothes are washed and folded, and their medications are given on time. Most importantly, they are never alone.

As my mom gets older, I often find myself worrying about her well-being while I’m at work.

Is she managing everything on her own?

Is she remembering to take her medication on time?

Is she feeling too lonely spending most of the day by herself?

These thoughts used to weigh heavily on me—until we found Vida. Knowing that my mom not only receives the care she needs but also gets to interact with other residents and warm-hearted caretakers makes all the difference.
