HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is primarily a Korean-made skin tightening and lifting machine.

When we discuss about HIFU, there are some jargons that may confuse most of our patients.
The common ones are MMFU, MPT and MPFU.

This article is written with the intention to clarify these issues. In case you are also confused like most of the others out there, come join us to deep-dive into understanding each of these abbreviations.

The latest Ultraformer HIFU machine is called 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐏𝐓 (The 4th generation).

Ultraformer MPT uses both 𝐌𝐌𝐅𝐔 and 𝐌𝐏𝐓 technology.

The previous generation, Ultraformer III, uses MMFU energy without the MPT technology.

𝐌𝐌𝐅𝐔 (Micro and Macro Focused Ultrasound) is the type of energy used, while 𝐌𝐏𝐓 (Micro-Pulsed Technology) is the new firing method that differentiates it from older Ultraformer models.
Here is a breakdown of how the technologies work together:

✅𝐌𝐌𝐅𝐔 (Micro and Macro Focused Ultrasound): This is the core technology that Ultraformer uses to deliver focused ultrasound waves to multiple layers of the skin.
Ⓜ️𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤-𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 energy targets the skin and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer to lift and tighten the face and neck.
Ⓜ️𝙈𝙖𝙘𝙧𝙤-𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 energy penetrates deeper to target and reduce fat in areas like the jowls and body.

✅𝐌𝐏𝐓 (Micro-Pulsed Technology): This is the advanced, patented feature of the Ultraformer MPT model.
It allows the device to deliver energy in 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀, 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 pulses rather than the single shots of previous models.
This newer firing method makes the treatment faster, more precise, and more comfortable for the patient.
𝐌𝐏𝐅𝐔 (Micro-Pulsed Focused Ultrasound) also means the same thing as MPT in some literature.

Whereas 𝐌𝐅𝐔 (Micro-Focused Ultrasound) on the other hand, is used in Ultherapy, an American-made ultrasound skin tightening and lifting machine.
It targets specific layers of the skin with precision with the help of direct visualization imaging. The energy is more concentrated and controlled, making it ideal for smaller and more delicate areas.

Newer research has found that 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is a key feature of melasma pathophysiology and contributes to its persistent nature.

The basement membrane zone (BMZ) acts as a critical boundary between the epidermis (outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer), helping to keep melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) in place. In melasma, this membrane is often damaged or "leaky" due to factors such as chronic UV exposure, inflammation, and the activity of certain enzymes.

This disruption allows:
• 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐞 into the deeper dermal layer, where it is then captured by immune cells called melanophages.

• 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 deeper into the skin (sometimes referred to as "pendulous melanocytes").

Melanin trapped in the dermis is much harder to treat with conventional methods that primarily target the epidermis, which is a major reason why melasma is often stubborn and tends to recur.

𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒆 is therefore considered a promising target for long-term melasma management.

The treatment of melasma includes protecting the skin from UV/visible light, using specific topical and oral medications, and 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧-𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 like intradermal injections.
