Sciatica is pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, usually from the lower back.
Typical symptoms include:
Pain radiating from the lower back → buttock → down one leg (sometimes to calf or foot)
Sharp, shooting, burning, or electric-like pain
Worse with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing
Tingling or “pins and needles” in the leg or foot
Numbness along the nerve pathway
Muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot
Pain usually affects one side only
Depending on nerve root involved:
L4–L5: pain to outer leg, top of foot, big toe
L5–S1: pain to back of leg, heel, sole of foot, little toes
⚠️ Red flag symptoms (need urgent referral):
Loss of bladder or bowel control
Severe or progressive leg weakness
Numbness in the saddle area
