What is Color Blindness?
Color blindness or known as Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) is a genetic condition that causes a person unable to identify certain colors such as red-green color. Such condition doesn't affect one daily life but might cause a person unable to work in certain area of work such as aircraft pilots, train drivers, police officers, firefighters, and members of the armed forces.
It is a genetic condition can affect up to 1 in 12 males (8%) and 1 in 200 females (0.5%). Most cases are inherited, but color blindness can also result from eye diseases or damage to the eye.
Because traffic signs and indicators follow coloring scheme internationally, people with color blindness are not eligible to get a driving license. However, in Malaysia the legality of driving for people with colorblindness is determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration various factors such as the severity of the condition and the ability to see traffic signals.
If someone with colorblindness fails the color vision test but still wants to obtain a driver's license, they have the option of undergoing a medical examination with a specialist. The specialist will evaluate the individual's ability to drive safely based on their overall vision and any compensatory strategies they may have developed to navigate the roads.
