We started the year at our workplace with kicking off a plant-based diet. It included 3 days of fruit and vegetable juicing/smoothie followed by 7 days of transition diet of fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and legumes with no or limited sugar, salt and processed food. Almost 2/3 of the office staff participated and most of them reported positive changes in their physical and mental well being. What a refreshing start of the new year 2026!

About 100 people in Zoom joined us last Saturday, 10th January for an afternoon health webinar on the theme: “Freedom from Unhealthy Behavior: Possible?” Two Preventive Health Experts expounded on the ways how to change lifestyle for the better and the key take aways are:
1. A leopard cannot change spots but we as humans can change our habits for the better!
2. To make a change is step-by-step approach: a. Have the desire or motivation to change, b. Knowledge about the behavior, c. Get the required skill on how to change.
3. Set your goals to change using the SMARTer principle (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound, evaluate and reward)
4. Identify at what stage you are in: pre-contemplation, contemplation, planning, action and/or maintenance
5. Identify you strengths, find support and pray that God will help you in making the change.

We salute the medical personnel but this shouldn’t be the case. People need to start taking care of themselves by starting healthy lifestyle habits. Malaysia has the highest number of overweight and obese people in Southeast Asia, the most number of people with Diabetes, the lowest in physical activity…we can start doing our part so that we do not burden the healthcare system.

Third hand smoke is more dangerous than second hand smoke. It is the type where the smoke lingers on to the place where the smoker smokes such as in the car, homes, indoor buildings, etc. The smoke sticks in the fabric, furnitures, curtains, sofa, etc and stays there causing toxic air.
The most vulnerable are those with Asthma or respiratory illnesses, babies and young children. California, USA is the first state that introduces “Third hand smoke law” whereby if someone wishes to sell their home, they must disclose if someone is/were smoker/s in the home being sold.

Passed unanimously, California Assembly Bill 455 requires homeowners to disclose any history of thirdhand smoke or va**ng residue when selling their property.
