Bharadvajasana – Wall Support
Why twist in this way?
By sitting on a block, the pelvis is elevated and can remain steady. The legs form a grounded foundation so the movement does not collapse into the lower back.
The wall gives a clear direction to rotate toward. Placing the fingers on the wall helps maintain lift through the trunk, encouraging the spine to extend upward from the hips before turning. This upward extension is essential in all twisting postures — we lengthen first, then rotate.
When the pelvis is stable and the spine is lifted, the twist becomes spacious rather than compressed.
Benefits of twisting:
Twists improve spinal mobility, nourish the intervertebral discs, and help relieve stiffness in the back and shoulders. They gently massage the abdominal organs, supporting digestion and circulation. Twisting also balances the nervous system — energizing when done actively, calming when done with steadiness and breath.
In this supported version, clarity replaces effort, and the action becomes precise and intelligent.
