COVID-19 is classified as a "dampness toxic pestilence" according to TCM doctrine. According to the 7th and 8th trial versions of the COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol in China, there are more than 18 recommended TCMs to prevent and treat COVID-19, including distinct disease stages such as mild, moderate, severe, and critical (Ming Lyu at al., 2021).

Jinhua Qinggan granules, Lianhua Qingwen capsule (granules), and Xuebijing injection are three highly recommended Chinese patent medicines (CPMs), and Qingfei Paidu decoction, Huashi Baidu formula, and Xuanfei Baidu formula are three Chinese medicine formulas with proven efficacies in treating COVID-19.

A study showed that, TCM is effective for preventing COVID-19, and we can avoid infection by taking a decoction made according to TCM principles (Zhao et al., 2021).
COVID-19 was categorized as a cold and dampness epidemic, and the pathogenic factors are found in the body's mucous membranes. COVID-19 is mostly found in the lungs, however here are exterior and interior relationships between the lungs and the large intestine.
TCM divides the disease into four stages according to the law of disease transmission. The early stages are characterized by dampness repressing the defensive qi of the lungs or of wind heat attacking the lungs. In the advanced stages, pathogenic heat accumulating in the lungs causes internal blockage and outward desertion.

Why do people eat dumplings on winter Solstice?
Every year on the winter solstice, dumplings are an indispensable meal. So why eat dumplings on winter Solstice?
It is said that this custom was left in memory of the "medical saint" Zhang Zhongjing's medicine for the winter solstice.
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, he saw that the villagers were thin; pale and "yellowish" looking; hungry and many of their ears were frozen. He asked his disciples to set up a medical shed, made a large pot of broth with dumplings for the villagers.
Zhang Zhongjing boiled mutton and some herbs to ward off cold in a pot and made ear-shaped "dumplings" with flour. After cooking, he distributed them to the villagers.
After eating "dumplings", people's ears became warm and their frostbitten ears were cured. The original winter solstice eating dumplings in rememberance of "medical saint" Zhang Zhongjing's "cold dumplings" grace.."
