🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ New evidence on daily steps: How Many Steps a Day Really Matter?

A systematic review + dose–response meta-analysis in The Lancet Group Public Health (57 studies; 35 cohorts) finds strong associations between step counts and multiple health outcomes.

Key takeaways
• Biggest shift point in the curve appears around 5,000–7,000 steps/day (non-linear for all-cause mortality, CVD incidence, dementia, falls).

-> Compared with 2,000 steps/day, 7,000 steps/day is associated with:
– 47% lower all-cause mortality
– 25% lower CVD incidence
– 47% lower CVD mortality
– 37% lower cancer mortality
– 14% lower type 2 diabetes incidence
– 38% lower dementia risk
– 22% fewer depressive symptoms
– 28% lower risk of falls

What this means
10,000 steps can remain a stretch goal for active people, but ~7,000 steps/day delivers large, clinically meaningful benefits, and may be more achievable for many adults.

Important caveats
Observational evidence; some outcomes have few studies and moderate heterogeneity; possible residual confounding; limited age-specific analyses.
