Indonesia Leads Southeast Asia with the Most Public Holidays
Southeast Asia is known for its cultural diversity, and that extends to how each country celebrates its traditions through public holidays. According to ASEAN Secretariat data, Indonesia tops the list with 27 holidays, followed by Cambodia with 22, and Myanmar with 19. These figures highlight how deeply cultural and religious festivities are woven into daily life across the region.
Indonesia’s 27 holidays reflect the nation’s pluralism — from Islamic celebrations like Eid al-Fitr to Christian, Hindu, and national observances. Cambodia, with 22 holidays, dedicates many to Buddhist traditions and royal events, while Myanmar’s 19 holidays include a mix of Buddhist, cultural, and independence-related festivities. These extended breaks provide citizens with time to honor faith, family, and national pride.
While Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar enjoy the most time off, other nations like Singapore and Laos have fewer holidays, with 11 and 9 days respectively. Despite the differences, public holidays across Southeast Asia play an important role in maintaining cultural identity and social cohesion — proving that rest and celebration are as vital as productivity in the region’s dynamic societies.
