Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are advised to check their lipid profile because PCOS is not just a reproductive condition—it also has important metabolic effects.
Here’s why:
Insulin resistance & obesity are common in PCOS → they can lead to abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Dyslipidemia (abnormal lipid levels) is more frequent in PCOS, even in women who are not overweight.
↑ LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”)
↑ Triglycerides
↓ HDL cholesterol (“good cholesterol”)
These changes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, hypertension).
Since many women with PCOS are young and may not show obvious symptoms, checking the lipid profile helps in early detection and prevention of long-term heart problems.
So, it is recommended to do a lipid profile in PCOS patients to monitor cardiovascular risks
