How many pairs of glasses accompanied you through the ups and downs of life?

All but 2 pairs of the love-shaped frames belonged to our 103-year-old customer. When Mrs Lim came with a bag full of her late husband’s eyewear, she brought up meeting the centenarian at the age of 18.

58 years later, the wife was asking if we are able to make good use of what he left behind.

“I don’t need Mr Lim’s glasses anymore.”

She sounded firm, but reluctant. Those spectacles probably reminded her a little too much of him.

Feeding Kangaroo was just one of Wei Min’s captured experiences in Rottnest Island. The campervan brought her to more native macropods and some other touristy places, offering the frequent traveller a picturesque view across Western Australia.

Before the young lady left for the 9-day trip, she was telling us about how uncomfortable her monthly contact lenses were. With dry eyes, Wei Min had to put on glasses while enjoying Japan and Taiwan previously.

Recommended to go on a rare date with smiling quokka, the bi-weekly contact lenses supported her eyes with reasonably high water content and oxygen level. Try adding Wei Min’s favourite people and all the good food to the vacation: Australia should be more than memorable among the countries stamped on her passport.

Our family started Gene Optometrist on 17th September 2018 and I’m taking this as a coincidental opportunity to give myself a break for 3 consecutive days.

We are going to be closed from 15th to 17th September and back at work on 18th September (Thursday).

Time to spend some time with the person in front of me.

Dad has been wearing this sandalwood glasses, but his “eyebrows” are green instead of the blue we see in the photo. They looked (to our surprise) really good on him.

An ideal frame checks so many boxes. Most importantly, it must be a pair that we are happy to put on and go home with. Dad has done both.

“星星.”

When the 3-year-old child saw a smaller star on the next slide, he pointed at our tablet before whispering an answer that we weren’t expecting from him.

“小星星.”

All of the 3 to 6 year olds at 8 different childcare centres didn’t just welcome us to check their eyes. They greeted us with their radiant innocence, curious glances and eventually some soft smiles.

Our job was to check every child’s vision. It was important to let the parents know about how well the children were able to see, so we shared the results with their teachers before concluding each visit.

Hopefully, those budding stars are learning in the comfort of good vision. They were a joy to work with and talk to.

Kamen’s view of her husband and daughter in Paris was picture-perfect. When we are looking at the people we love, our vision is often tinted with visible affection.

Daniel probably did not realise how loving his eyes had become when he was carrying Lexie. The father’s Rayban sunglasses offered a very cooling green tint against the bright sun. Good sunnies complement what we see: things should be clear, natural and comfortable.

As for the best sunnies, we just love wearing them and enjoy their vision spontaneously. Don’t ask the daddy and mummy at the Eiffel Tower about this though, especially when both parents were looking at the apple of their eyes. I think they are biased.

I asked Melvin if he looked better with glasses after his laser eye surgery. It was a casual WhatsApp banter as we both knew the true motivation behind was daily convenience.

This gentleman started needing spectacles when he was a 7-year-old kid. 27 years later, Melvin parted ways with his myopic best friends. He no longer needs to look for his “eyes” every morning and the tennis lover has been enjoying being on the court without any eyewear since.

Melvin had myopia as high as 600 before his eye doctor corrected it to a mere 50 and 75 (right and left eye). Post operation, the patient’s unspectacled vision is clear and comfortable. But I wondered if he ever missed putting on a nice pair of frame.

“It’s not perfect but I can live with it.”

Well, I guess the answer is no.

MC and EG started visiting us in 2019 when they were just boyfriend and girlfriend. Look at them now.

Most brides and grooms prefer taking their pre-wedding photos with contact lenses on instead of glasses. Some, however, would appear in front of the photographer with neither.

The couple picked different options that made them comfortable in 2022. And the camera was right there to capture MC and EG as—husband and wife—clearly.

Jeffery creates garments with his smiley face and busy eyes. When he was back visiting dad and mum in Balik Pulau, he told me about how tired his eyes were after work every day.

We do not need our full eye power looking at things near to us. For someone who sews batiks and does hand embroidery, Jeffery is able to relax both eyes while enjoying his handcraft by viewing through the bottom part of his new glasses now.

Consider a pair of lenses that could adjust your optical prescription to keep your eyes comfortable. They are really convenient for us, not just at work but back home as well.

Putting on glasses has just become a part of Min Jae’s life too. He was posing confidently with different frames before his mother, sister and Eugene in the shop. Such a cheeky and chirpy boy.

When we met for the second time, Min Jae could not wait half a second more to wear his new eyewear. And Mrs Kim shared a couple of his adorable photos through WhatsApp: the other one was taken with Vivian and another pose.

As optometrists, we check your eyes and discuss their numbers with you. And what better way to do our job than with a relaxed smile in front of absolute concentration?

R: -1.25 (6/6)
L: -0.25 (6/6)

“You are short-sighted: minus one point two five for your right eye and minus zero point two five for your left eye.”

When there is a 6/6 or 20/20 written nicely next to your eye power, the notation shows that you have normal vision. Take Mr. Khairul as an example, his right and left eye are able to see at 6 metres (or 20 feet) what a pair of normal eyes should see at the same distance monocularly — or this is commonly described as “perfect” vision.
