WHAT IS THE NAMA METHOD? The Nama people of Namibia have believed in the healing power of massage for generations. It is passed on in families. For example, I learned my skill from my mother, who learned from her mother. The gift of healing comes from God. Our massage reminds regular deep-tissue massage but is more attentive to each client's specific needs. From an early age, we are taught to listen with our hands. That is how we learn to detect and respond to different physiological and psychological problems in the human body. Later on, I also learned modern full-body massage through a apprenticeship at Kidonsia Massage Therapy in Swakopmund. In the Nama tradition, wind has a lot to do with well-being. All living beings have their own wind, a gift of life from God. There is also another type of wind, a wind of sickness that may enter a person’s body. This wind afflicts our organs and makes them move. Massaging can relocate organs to their proper positions. It also helps us to release excess wind and stiffness from tendons.

Should you hear your Nama masseuse belch loudly while massaging, this is not an insult but !g*i, an act that is used to release the sickness wind from the patient.
