Hope Initiatives Southern Africa- Namibia (HISA)

Hope Initiatives Southern Africa- Namibia (HISA) Hope, Change, Self-Reliance www.hisanamibia.org We help children in the squatter settlements of Namibia which have been hit hard by the AIDS pandemic.

Most households are headed by women and children, and many of them can no longer cope. They do not have enough food or decent housing, and the children cannot go to school. We provide opportunities and support for people to make better lives for themselves. Namibia is one of the poorest African countries. It has been politically stable since it obtained independence from South Africa in 1990, but most of its 2 million people live on less than $2 US a day. Windhoek, the capital, has overflowed with urban migration into squatter camps to the north of the city, in Okahandja Park, Kilimandjaro, Babilon and Okuruyangava. These communities are among the poorest in the country. This is where HISA is based. Our work helps the young, particularly Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs). We provide:

- Health and Nutrition
- Child Care
- Education
- Community Work

All our initiatives share one aim: giving people opportunities. Hope, Change, Self-reliance

Initial Project Visit by Finnish Delegation

As part of the initial project engagement and partnership strengthening, a high-level delegation from the Embassy of Finland in Namibia, together with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Programme Director for Circular Economy from the Finnish Innovation Fund SITRA, conducted a visit to HISA.

The visit marked an important milestone as HISA begins the implementation of its circular economy initiative aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods, environmental stewardship, and community-driven solutions within peri-urban informal settlements.

During the visit, the delegation engaged with the HISA team to gain insights into the project’s objectives, implementation approach, and anticipated impact. Discussions focused on how circular economy principles—such as reuse, recycling, and resource efficiency—can support community resilience, youth employment, and environmentally sustainable practices at the grassroots level.

The visit also provided an opportunity to showcase HISA’s ongoing environmental and community-based initiatives, including plastic recycling activities, community-driven sustainability practices, and capacity-building efforts that empower local residents to participate in circular economic opportunities! ♻️ ❤️💙🤍💚

Last month on the 5th of February, HISA Namibia had the opportunity to engage with 150 students at one of the local Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) on the important topic of alcohol and drug abuse.

It was a powerful and engaging session where the dangers of substance abuse and its impact on young people’s futures were openly discussed. The conversation encouraged students to make informed choices and highlighted the importance of protecting their health, dreams, and opportunities.

The session was facilitated by the organization’s Music Icon & Lead Area Coordinator, who connected with the students through relatable insights and inspiring messages. 🎤

Together, we continue to raise awareness, empower young people, and build healthier communities.
