Skin Cancer Myth: “All skin cancers are raised.”
This is not true.
Many people believe that a skin cancer must look like a raised bump. In reality, some of the most common skin cancers can appear flat, subtle, or slightly scaly.
For example, Squamous Cell Carcinoma in situ (also known as Bowen’s disease) often appears as a flat, red or scaly patch on the skin. Because it isn’t raised, many people mistake it for eczema, dry skin, or a rash.
Skin cancers can present in many ways:
• Flat red patches
• Rough or scaly areas
• Changing spots
• Non-healing lesions
• Pigmented marks that evolve over time
If something on your skin is new, changing, or not healing — it should be checked. Early detection saves lives.
