*Ovarian regression in laying birds*
Ovarian regression is one of the many factors associated with reduced/poor egg production. It is a situation where fully developed ovaries fail to produce follicles and ova and goes dormant. Normal ovaries will contain follicles in various sizes and stages of development while regressed ovaries will just appear cauliflower- like with small whitish follicles.
Regression of the o***y is frequently caused by:
1. Low body weight (due to poor rearing, underfeeding or giving poor quality feed, or force moulting active birds)
2. Deliberate reduction of feed (quality and quantity)
3. Overcrowding, or lack of feeder space.
4. Obesity due to over feeding
5. Infectious diseases
*Ovarian regression* is usually very serious in actively laying birds or birds at the pre-peak period. Once the o***y regresses, it may take a long before it resumes activities and in some cases may not attain peak production.
Management of ovarian regression should be geared towards removing the cause of ovarian regression and stimulating ovarian cyclicity.
Adequate quality feed must be provided.
Supplements that help fat metabolism such as choline chloride or liver tonic should be provided to prevent obesity or abdominal fat accumulation.
Aminoacid supplement and good vitamin should be provided to help in improving body weight gain.
Supplements containing Vitamin A,D,E Zinc and selenium are very good in stimulation of ovarian activities.
Young and actively laying flock should never be force moulted.
In no time should grower mash be fed to actively laying birds as this is like force moulting leading to ovarian regression.
Adequate lightening of 15-17 hours per day should be provided to stimulate release of reproductive hormone that accelerate ovarian activities
Some infectious disease like ND, fowl cholera, Pullorum etc that affect ovarian development should be diagnosed and treated early.
Many farmers are just feeding nonproductive laying birds with accumulated loss overtime.
Its very important to dispose such birds with regressed ovaries that fail to return to production after all measure have been taken.
This should be carefully carried out through selective culling.
Thank you.
*ADDENDUM*
Laying birds are prone to this condition because of various manipulations in feed formular and formulations, due to the current challenge of hike in prices of feed raw materials.
