“Pharmacists: Caring for you” is the theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day.
“This year’s theme was chosen to reflect the important role of pharmacists in providing care to the public, and also to highlight the emotional connection they have with their patients. The role of pharmacists has evolved from that of a provider of medicines to that of a provider of care. Pharmacists have a vital role in the outcome of pharmacological therapies and ultimately strive to improve patients’ quality of life,” Wishing you all a healthy and fulfilling year ahead.

Vitamins and Supplements May Reduce Aggression in Children

Children who show signs of aggressive behavior may benefit from omega-3, vitamin, and mineral supplementation. A new study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry is the first to provide some support for the idea that supplements, in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), may reduce aggressive behavior in children. Lead study author Adrian Raine, PhD, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, remarked that pharmacists could easily apply these findings to their practice. “If pharmacists are advising parents who have children showing significant aggressive behavior and who are not responding to other treatments, there would be little harm in trying omega-3 and multivitamins,” he said.

The Key to Happiness and Living Longer? Harvard Found It

According to Harvard professor and psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, it has nothing to do with fame, money, or success.

"Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period."

In a multigenerational study that began at Harvard in the 1930s, two groups were studied: male Harvard students (which the New York Times noted included John F. Kennedy) and young boys from disadvantaged families living in Boston's poorest neighborhoods. Through brain scans, interviews with the subjects (and eventually their families), blood analyses, and health exams, the 75+ year study has given a pretty profound conclusion. Happiness and health are all about relationships.

Here are the biggest takeaways:
1.People who are more socially connected are happier, physically healthier, and live longer.
2.Quality and quantity when it comes to close relationships; relationship satisfaction predicts future health.
3.While high-conflict marriages can be worse than divorce, a "good relationship" doesn't mean zero bickering. There are ups and downs, but the trust, commitment, and respect are key.
4."Loneliness kills." The feeling of loneliness can be toxic; people who are isolated are less happy, their health declines sooner, their brain function declines sooner, and they live shorter lives.

In his Ted Talk, Waldinger reminded us to lean in to our relationships as much as we do our professional endeavors; our lives depend on it! Make friends in and out of work, and nurture your relationships with friends, family, and significant others, no matter how challenging it is. "Relationships are messy and complicated; it's not sexy or glamorous. But it's life-long."

Effectiveness of NSAIDs for the treatment of pain in knee and hip osteoarthritis. The Lancet (03/17/2016) da Costa, Bruno R.; Reichenback, Stephen; Keller, Noah; et al.

Researchers tapped 74 randomized trials for a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of different NSAIDs in treating pain from osteoarthritis. The study considered various doses of the NSAIDs diclofenac, etoricoxib, rofecoxib, celecoxib, and naproxen as well as of paracetamol. All 23 preparations yielded improvement of pain symptoms; but the difference from placebo was not clinically meaningful for six of them. Among the others, a daily dose of diclofenac 150 mg emerged as the best NSAID preparation for both alleviating pain and improving function. The researchers also determined that paracetamol taken alone, no matter the dose, is not an effective pain-relief option for patients with osteoarthritis. The study was funding by Switzerland's Arco Foundation and by the Swiss National Science Foundation. They concluded thus 'On the basis of the available data, we see no role for single-agent paracetamol for the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis irrespective of dose. We provide sound evidence that diclofenac 150 mg/day is the most effective NSAID available at present, in terms of improving both pain and function. Nevertheless, in view of the safety profile of these drugs, physicians need to consider our results together with all known safety information when selecting the preparation and dose for individual patients'

Babies Aren't The Only Ones To Benefit From Breastfeeding

A new study finds that, following gestational diabetes, women who breastfeed immediately after giving birth are half as likely to develop type 2 diabetes within two years, when compared with women with the same condition who exclusively formula feed. The finding further cements the idea that breastfeeding is not only beneficial to the child’s health but also the mother’s. Although it has been suspected that breastfeeding may lower this risk, a recent study conducted by researchers from Kaiser Permanente, a health care company located in Northern California, has confirmed this theory. For the study, researchers followed more than 1,000 women who had experienced gestational diabetes for up to four years following childbirth. The researchers took note of whether or not they breastfed following childbirth, and if so, for how long. In addition to physical health benefits, breastfeeding also stimulates the release of the hormone oxytocin, which can help improve a mother’s mental health by reducing stress levels, blood pressure, and her overall risk for postpartum depression.

Top three Natural Heart Health supplements
1. FISH OIL - OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS
Fish Oil contains the highest amount of Omega-3 Fatty Acids... and Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), which can lead to sudden death. Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease triglyceride levels (cholesterol), slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure.
2. CoEnzyme Q-10 (COQ10)
The beneficial effect of CoQ10 in the prevention and treatment of heart disease is due to its ability to improve energy production in cells, inhibit blood clot formation, and act as an antioxidant. Multiple studies have found that people who received daily CoQ10 supplements within 3 days of a heart attack were significantly less likely to experience subsequent heart attacks and chest pain. In addition, these same patients were less likely to die of heart disease than those who did not receive the supplements.
3. GARLIC
Scientists have studied garlic fairly extensively as it relates to the treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia and it seems to be effective in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol in individuals who take it on a regular basis. The active component of garlic is an amino acid called alliin which is further converted to allicin and other active metabolites.

World Heart Day
World Heart Day takes place on 29 September every year and is a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world's biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD).
This World Heart Day, the focus is on creating healthy heart environments. By ensuring that everyone has the chance to make healthy heart choices wherever they live, work and play, World Heart Day encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk, and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world’s number one killer. It is currently responsible for 17.3 million deaths per year, and by 2030 this figure is expected to rise to 23 million. But most CVD can be prevented by addressing risk factors, such as to***co use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.
Too often, society 'blames' the individual’s lifestyle choices for his or her CVD. But the environments in which we live, work and play can have a huge effect on our ability to make the right choices for our heart health.
Do you know how heart-healthy your environment is?
We believe that everyone, everywhere has the right to make healthy heart choices. Let’s talk about how to take actions to reduce you and your family's risk of CVD where you live:
Put the spotlight on your home and see what you could change to make it heart healthy. Making even just a few changes can help reduce your own and your family's risk of heart disease and stroke.
Stock your home with healthy food options: Limit pre-packed food that are often high in sugar, fat and salt. Incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables in your meals or swap sweet treats for mango or other fruits. Prepare healthy school or work lunches at home.
Ban smoking in your home: Stopping smoking in your home will not only improve your health but also your children's health. Quitting smoking is also a great way to be a positive role model for your children.
Be active: Limit TV watching at home. Organize outdoor activities such as cycling, walking, running or simply playing in the garden.
Recognize your CVD risk: Visit a health professional such as our pharmacist who can measure your blood pressure, and glucose levels, weight and body mass index, and advise on your risk. Once you know your CVD risk, you can make a specific plan to improve your heart health and your healthcare professional can also advise on appropriate treatment options where necessary. We remain you partner in health.

Bad breath (contd)
What can I do to prevent bad breath?
Bad breath can be reduced or prevented if you:
Practise good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss to remove food debris and plaque.
Brush your teeth after you eat Don't forget to brush your tongue, too.
Replace your toothbrush every two to three months. Use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between your teeth once a day.

Stop smoking/chewing to***co-based products.

Drink lots of water. This will keep your mouth moist. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) or sucking on sweets (preferably sugarless) also stimulates the production of saliva, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.

See your dentist regularly, as advised. He or she will conduct an oral examination and professional teeth cleaning and will be able to detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odour.

Who treats bad breath?
In most cases, your dentist can treat the cause of bad breath. If your dentist determines that your mouth is healthy and that the odour is not of oral origin, you may be referred to your doctor or to a specialist to determine the odour source and treatment plan. If the odour is due to gum disease, for example, your dentist can either treat the disease or refer you to a periodontist, a dentist who specialises in treating gum conditions.

What products can I use to eliminate bad breath?
You can buy a number of mouthwashes over-the-counter that claim to eliminate bad breath. However many of these mouthwashes generally provide only a temporary way to mask unpleasant mouth odour. There are, however, several antiseptic mouth-rinse products available that instead of simply masking breath odour kill the germs that cause bad breath. Ask our pharmacists about which product is best for you.
Have a great day ahead.
