Strengthening hearing care across Sub-Saharan Africa 🌍👂

Through a powerful collaboration between the Hearing Health Care Alliance, MED-EL, and the Australian Development Agency, we are investing in local capacity building by training and empowering hearing healthcare professionals across the region.

By equipping local specialists with advanced knowledge and practical skills, this initiative helps build sustainable hearing care systems, ensuring that more children and adults with hearing loss can access quality care closer to home.

Together, we are building expertise, strengthening services, and creating lasting impact for communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Early hearing checks can make a life-changing difference in a child’s development.

As part of our World Hearing Day awareness program, free school hearing screenings were carried out in Freetown, helping identify children who may need further hearing support.

Early detection means children have a better chance to learn, communicate, and thrive in school and beyond.

Free Newborn Hearing Screening in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Some of the most important health checks take just a few minutes.

In Freetown, newborn hearing screening was carried out as part of a multi-day hearing awareness program marking World Hearing Day.

Because hearing loss is often invisible at birth, early screening helps ensure children who need support are identified as early as possible.

Through initiatives like this, MED-EL continues its commitment to expanding access to hearing health and supporting children and families across Africa.

Ever wondered how a cochlear implant works?

A cochlear implant helps people with severe to profound hearing loss hear in a different way.
Instead of relying on damaged parts of the ear, it picks up sound, converts it into electrical signals, and sends those signals directly to the hearing nerve. The brain then recognizes them as sound.
