President of IDN/AND Commends Senate for Passage of the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill

The President of the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) and the Association of Nigerian Dietitians (AND), Tajudeen Olutope Ahmed, Esq., FIDN, has commended the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the historic passage of the Dietitians Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Mr. Ahmed described the development as “a monumental stride towards strengthening the dietetics profession in Nigeria and safeguarding public health through improved nutrition standards and professional regulation.”

He noted that with the passage of this bill, Nigeria is now a step closer to establishing a regulatory council that will ensure that only qualified and licensed professionals practice dietetics in the country—thereby promoting excellence, ethics, and public confidence in nutrition care delivery.

While congratulating all Nigerian dietitians on this remarkable achievement, Mr. Ahmed emphasized that the journey toward professional recognition and regulation has been long and demanding, involving years of persistent advocacy, partnership, and dedication.

He expressed profound appreciation to the leadership and members of both chambers of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate Committee on Health, for their foresight and commitment to advancing the nutrition and dietetics profession in Nigeria.

Mr. Ahmed, therefore, urged His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to give his immediate assent to the bill, noting that timely approval will enhance Nigeria’s capacity to tackle the growing burden of malnutrition and diet-related diseases nationwide.

> “The assent of this bill will not only empower the Dietitians Council to regulate and standardize practice but will also contribute immensely to the attainment of national and global nutrition and health goals,” he stated.

He finally called on all dietitians across Nigeria to remain united, professional, and proactive in supporting the implementation phase once the bill is signed into law.
