Gait Analysis:
**Stop guessing, start walking.** 🚶‍♂️✨

Ever feel like your prosthetic or brace is *almost* right, but something just feels... off? That’s where gait analysis comes in.

We don't just stand back and watch you walk. We’re looking at the math of your movement—finding where you’re losing energy or where a "hot spot" is hiding before it ruins your day.

It’s about making your tech work for you, not the other way around. Let’s get you moving smoother.

Drop a 👣 if you’re ready for a tune-up, or DM us to see how we can help.

One common fear Orthotists hear is "If I wear this brace, won't my muscles just get weaker?"

The short answer: No. In fact, it’s usually the opposite.

When you have a structural instability or a neurological condition, your body spends massive amounts of energy just trying to stay upright. This leads to "compensatory movements"—where other muscles overwork and tire out just to keep you moving.

The Fact: Orthotics are a Partnership, not a Replacement.

Think of a high-quality orthosis (like an AFO or spinal brace) as a biophysical partner:

Alignment: It puts your joints in the "Goldilocks Zone" where your muscles can actually fire more efficiently.

Fatigue Reduction: By handling the structural support, your muscles can focus on movement rather than just holding on.

Pain Management: Less strain means less pain, which means you can walk further and stay active longer.

The Goal: We don't want to replace your motion; we want to optimize it. A proper "Fix and Fit" ensures that your brace is a tool for strength, not a crutch for weakness.

Don't let fear stop your progress. Re-align your body, don't just re-place your effort.

Why your "Fit" changes before your lunch break. 🧦

If you use a prosthesis, you’ve felt it: your socket feels perfect at 8:00 AM, but by 2:00 PM, it feels "roomy" or unstable.

Is the device breaking? No. It’s biology.

Your residual limb is a dynamic environment. Throughout the day, fluid levels (edema) shift due to:

Activity: Exercise pushes fluid out of the limb.

Temperature: Heat causes swelling; cold causes shrinkage.

Diet: Salt intake and hydration play a massive role.

The Fix: Mastery of the "Sock Ply"
Managing your "fit" isn't about moving the hardware—it's about managing the volume. Adding or removing prosthetic socks is how you maintain that "Fix and Fit" connection.

The Goal: Total contact. If there is a gap, there is friction. If there is friction, there is skin breakdown.

Knowledge Check: If you feel your limb "bottoming out" in the socket, it’s time to add a ply. If you feel too much pressure or can't get into the socket, you might need to drop a ply.

Don’t chase the hardware. Manage the volume. Master the movement.

🧭 The Human Element: Why the Device is Only Half the Story

The most sophisticated prosthetic device in the world remains a tool on a shelf without the person who wears it. Here is why the individual—not the device—is the true driver of success:

1. The Work of "Pre-habilitation"

A prosthetic fit is only as stable as the body supporting it. Success starts with the grueling work of strengthening the core, maintaining range of motion, and desensitizing the residual limb. That effort happens in the gym and at home, long before the device is even donned.

2. The Mental Map (Proprioception)

Learning to walk or reach with a prosthesis requires the brain to rewrite its internal map of the body. This "neuroplasticity" isn't automatic; it requires intense focus, thousands of repetitions, and the mental resilience to keep going when the brain and the limb don't yet speak the same language.

3. Consistency Over Complexity

A basic, well-aligned mechanical device used with 100% commitment will always outperform a #50,000,000 "smart" limb that sits in a closet. The "difference" is the daily choice to put the device on, face the discomfort of the learning curve, and push past the plateau.

4. Adaptation is a Skill

Every day presents a new terrain—uneven grass, a crowded store, a flight of stairs. A prosthesis provides the means, but the patient provides the *strategy*. The ability to anticipate movement and adjust balance is a human skill that no sensor can fully replicate.

*The Takeaway:*
Technology can provide the opportunity for mobility, but the patient provides the *will* to move. When we celebrate a "miracle walk," we aren't just celebrating a feat of engineering—we are celebrating a feat of human character.

How does an orthotic actually work?

Orthotics aren't just "braces." They're biomechanical tools designed to:

✅ Improve function
✅ Reduce pain
✅ Prevent further deformity
✅ Support healing after injury or surgery

Whether it's a custom foot insert, a knee brace, or a spinal support — each device is tailored to the individual's anatomy and goals.

The goal isn't just support. It's better movement, for the long term.

Every device has a story behind it. 📦➡️🦿

Behind every prosthetic and orthotic is a person — with goals, challenges, and a reason to keep moving. At Fix and Fit, we don't just provide devices. We provide the support, expertise, and care that help people take their next step.

Here's a look at some of the devices we fit. 💙

Stability starts from the ground up. 🦶✨

Whether it’s managing a sports injury or supporting a lifelong condition, a custom orthosis from Fix and Fit provides the alignment one's body needs to move without pain. We don’t believe in 'one size fits all'—
Every brace we craft is as unique as the person wearing it.
