16Days of Activism.

Survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) are incredibly resilient individuals who often experience significant mental health challenges as a result of their trauma.

These challenges can include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health conditions.

It is essential to provide mental health support to survivors of GBV to empower them to heal and recover from their experiences.
There are numerous types of mental health support that can be beneficial for survivors of GBV.
These include:

1. Counseling and therapy: Counseling and therapy can provide survivors with a safe and supportive space to talk about their experiences and work through their trauma.

2. Support groups: Support groups can provide survivors with a sense of community and connection with others who have had similar experiences.

3. Medication: In some cases, medication may be helpful in managing symptoms of mental health conditions.

4. Self-care practices: Self-care practices, such as yoga, meditation, and journaling, can help survivors to manage stress and promote healing.

It is crucial to note that not all survivors of GBV will need mental health support. However, if a survivor is experiencing symptoms of mental health conditions, it is vital to seek professional help.

Understanding Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is an intense emotional reaction to the perception (or reality) of rejection or criticism. It’s common in people with ADHD, although others may experience it too.

With RSD, even small setbacks or perceived negative feedback can feel overwhelming and deeply personal, leading to feelings of intense shame, sadness, and worthlessness. This isn’t about being “too sensitive” but rather a neurological response where the brain reacts strongly to social cues, real or imagined.

Symptoms include;
- Extreme emotional reactions to perceived rejection or criticism.
- Withdrawal from social interactions to avoid possible rejection.
- Difficulty managing relationships, both personal and professional.
- Feeling overly responsible for conflicts or misunderstandings.

How to cope 👇👇👇
1. Therapy & Support: Working with a therapist, especially one who understands RSD, can help you develop coping strategies tailored to your experience.

2. Set Healthy Boundaries: Learning to say no or express your needs without fear can strengthen self-worth over time.

3. Reframing Thoughts: Challenge and reframe automatic negative thoughts. Recognize that not every setback or reaction is personal.

Understanding and managing RSD is a journey, but with the right support and tools, it’s possible to reduce its impact on daily life. Remember, sensitivity is not a weakness; it’s part of what makes you resilient and empathetic.
