Stretch marks (also called striae) occur when the skin stretches or shrinks quickly, causing the collagen and elastin in the skin to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.
Common Causes of Stretch Marks:
1. Rapid Weight Gain or Loss
• Sudden changes in body size can stretch the skin beyond its elasticity, leading to stretch marks.
2. Pregnancy
• Hormonal changes and abdominal expansion cause the skin to stretch, especially around the belly, breasts, thighs, and hips.
3. Puberty
• Growth spurts during puberty can cause stretch marks, particularly in areas like the thighs, back, and breasts.
4. Bodybuilding or Intense Exercise
• Rapid muscle growth stretches the skin, especially around the arms, shoulders, and chest.
5. Corticosteroid Use
• Long-term use of corticosteroid creams or pills can thin the skin and increase the likelihood of developing stretch marks.
6. Genetics
• If your parents had stretch marks, you may be more likely to develop them too.
7. Medical Conditions
• Certain conditions, like Cushing’s syndrome or Marfan syndrome, affect skin elasticity and can lead to stretch marks.
8. Dehydration and Poor Nutrition
• A lack of nutrients that support skin health, such as zinc, vitamin C, and protein, can reduce skin strength and flexibility.
