MEDICAL SOCIAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT, FUHSTHA, CELEBRATES WORLD SOCIAL WORK DAY: HONOURS PHILANTHROPISTS
The Medical Social Welfare Department at FUHSTHA celebrated World Social Work Day 2025 with a presentation on "Intergenerational Solidarity" and an award ceremony recognizing philanthropists for their contributions to hospital patients on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
In a paper titled "Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Well-being: The Role of Medical Social Workers in Hospitals," Abubakar Alhassan Bichi, FSWA, and Isah Abubakar explored the crucial role of medical social workers in strengthening relationships between patients and their families, with a focus on improving patient care and overcoming psychosocial barriers affecting patients' rights.
The presentation highlighted the importance of providing dignified care for elderly and vulnerable patients, while encouraging hospitals to adopt family-centered care policies. It also emphasized community involvement in mentorship and educational programs.
According to Abubakar Alhassan Bichi, the Head of the Medical Social Work Department, the individuals honored were selected based on their contributions to supporting vulnerable patients at the hospital. Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHA, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, received an award of excellence for his outstanding leadership.
Among the awardees were His Royal Highness, the Emir of Katagum, Alh. Dr. Umar Faruk II, OON; Dr. Musa Babayo (Talban Katagum); Hon. Ibrahim M. Baba (Imba) Prof. Muhammed Alkali, Deputy Vice Chancellor, FUHSA; the current and former Chief Medical Advisers, Dr. Sani A. Giade and Dr. I.A. Imoudu; the Director of Administration, Alh. Mohammed Ibrahim Kari; the Head of Nursing Services, Alh. Mohammed S. Kardam, and several senior staff members of the hospital.
Additionally, Alh. Umaru Sanda Adamu, Chairman of the League of Hospital Friends, along with many notable figures from the community, were also recognized.
In his remarks, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum praised the Social Welfare Department for its work across all hospital units and used the platform to caution staff against corrupt practices, particularly those involving the unauthorized sale of blood from the hospital’s blood bank to unsuspecting patients.
The event, held at the Baba Ballama Conference Hall, was attended by members of the top management committee, some departmental heads, and staff.
