The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) delegation, led by Prof. Clara Ladi Ejembi, paid a condolence and courtesy visit to the family of the late Prof. Umar Shehu, former Ceremonial President of APHPN.

The visit, undertaken by members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Council (NEC) of APHPN, was to honour his enduring legacy, remarkable contributions to public health practice, and his unwavering commitment to the growth of the Association.

APHPN remains grateful for the life and service of Prof. Umar Shehu and extends heartfelt condolences to his family.

APHPN Conference 2026 | Advocacy in Action

As part of activities marking the APHPN Conference 2026 in Maiduguri, the leadership of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) paid an advocacy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Borno State Ministry of Health and Human Services on 10th February 2026.

The visit underscored APHPN’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with government stakeholders, advancing public health policies, and improving health outcomes for the people of Borno State and Nigeria at large.

Advocacy Visit by the APHPN BOT & National Executive Council

Today, 10th February 2026, the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), ably led by Prof. Clara Ladi Ejembi, alongside members of the National Executive Council, paid an advocacy visit to the Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele.

Prof. Ejembi expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for the remarkable development of the Department of Community Medicine, UNIMAID, and highlighted the significance of the APHPN 1st National Conference in Borno State, themed:

“Healing in the Crossfire: Delivering Health Services in Conflict and Crises.”

She noted that the conference aims to examine crisis-related health challenges, build resilience, and develop strategies and recommendations to support populations affected by conflict and emergencies.

The President of APHPN, Dr. Terfa Kene, commended the Vice Chancellor for his leadership in recovery efforts following the Borno flood disaster and invited him to adopt a model Primary Health Care (PHC) initiative in line with the vision of the current APHPN Exco to strengthen PHCs across Nigeria.

Prof. Shaibu Yahaya also acknowledged and appreciated the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to advancing the Department of Community Medicine at UNIMAID.

In his response, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele thanked the “powerful APHPN delegation” and reaffirmed his commitment to further developing the Department of Community Medicine and strengthening Public Health in Borno State.

The visit concluded with the Vice Chancellor presenting a gift to the APHPN BOT Chairman, Prof. Clara Ladi Ejembi, as a symbol of goodwill and collaboration.

APHPN 42nd AGM & Scientific Conference Begins in Maiduguri!

The Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) officially kicked off its 42nd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference today at the Indimi Conference Centre, Maiduguri, Borno State, starting with a pre-conference press briefing.

Addressing members of the press, the APHPN President, Dr. Terfa Kene, welcomed delegates on behalf of the Board of Trustees, National Executive Council, and the entire APHPN family.

He reaffirmed APHPN’s commitment to advancing population-based public health practice across Nigeria through advocacy, equity, inclusivity, and evidence-driven policy engagement.

With thought-provoking sub-themes on climate change, resilient health systems, and healthcare delivery in conflict settings, the conference promises rich plenary sessions, breakout discussions, abstract presentations, and expert insights.

Dr. Kene highlighted the significance of hosting the conference in Maiduguri, commending the Borno State Government under His Excellency Engr. Prof. Babagana Zulum for its strides in conflict resolution, humanitarian response, and health system rebuilding—an example with lessons for the entire nation.

He also expressed gratitude to the Borno APHPN Chapter, the Local Organising Committee, keynote speaker Dr. Yusuf T. Sununu, and partners including the Borno State Government, NEDC, UNFPA, APIN, and AVE Health Sense for their support.

National President of APHPN Visits Rivers State

Fresh from his impactful working visit to Bayelsa State—where he held high-level advocacy meetings and joined a rural public health outreach in Sagbama—the National President of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN), Dr. Terfa Kene, continued his tour with a visit to Port Harcourt today, Monday, 24th November 2025.

In Rivers State, the President paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP), Dr. Vetty Agala, and participated in a consultative workshop focused on reviewing and updating the RIVCHPP Health Benefit Package.

Dr. Kene commended RIVCHPP for its remarkable strides in advancing social health insurance, expanding risk protection, and improving access to quality healthcare for the people of Rivers State.

Also present was APHPN Vice President 1, Prof. Omosivie Maduka, who served as the lead facilitator for the workshop and joined the President, the Executive Secretary, and other participants for a group photograph.

‎As part of the Day 4 engagements, the National President of APHPN also paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), Professor Dimie Ogoina.

‎During the meeting, the Vice Chancellor formally introduced the University’s ASPIRE Agenda, outlining the strategic pillars guiding BMU’s development. The acronym ASPIRE represents:

‎As the official visit of the National President of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) entered Day Four, the President paid a courtesy visit to the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, Dr. James Omietimi.

‎During the engagement, Dr. Terfa Kene commended the Medical Director for fostering an enabling environment that supports Public Health Physicians in delivering on their mandates. He acknowledged the MD’s commitment to providing the necessary space, responsibilities, and institutional support that allow Public Health Physicians to fully apply their expertise and contribute meaningfully to patient care and population health.

‎In his remarks, Dr. Omietimi highlighted the significant value Public Health Physicians bring to the institution. He noted that through advocacy, community outreach programmes, leadership roles, and other strategic contributions, Public Health Physicians have expanded service delivery opportunities and created avenues that enhance the hospital’s internally generated revenue.

‎The Medical Director expressed gratitude for the visit and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to strengthening its collaboration with APHPN while offering sustained support to the Public Health Physicians serving within the facility.

‎As part of the ongoing activities marking the National President’s official visit to Bayelsa State, the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) conducted a comprehensive medical outreach in Agbere Community, Sagbama Local Government Area.

‎The outreach successfully attended to 192 patients, providing a range of essential health services aimed at improving access to quality care at the community level. Services rendered included:

‎*Day 2 of the APHPN National President’s Visit to Bayelsa State*

‎The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) continued its scheduled engagements as the National President’s official visit entered Day Two.

‎As part of the day’s activities, the delegation of APHPN members paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa Health Insurance Authority (BHIA), Dr. Agada, accompanied by the Head of Quality Assurance, Dr. Ogbuku.

‎During the visit, the Executive Secretary reiterated the Authority’s commitment to creating an enabling environment that supports public health research and evidence generation. He also provided comprehensive insights into the structure and operations of the BHIA scheme, outlining key components including the formal, informal, student, and vulnerable group programmes.

‎Dr. Agada encouraged the Association to intensify advocacy for increased enrolment into BHIA, noting that wider participation remains critical to expanding access to quality healthcare services across Bayelsa State. He urged members to strengthen stakeholder engagement and carry out community-wide sensitisation to raise awareness about the benefits of the scheme.

‎Responding, the National President of APHPN, Dr. Terfa Kene, commended BHIA for its progressive initiatives and proposed the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BHIA and APHPN. This partnership, he stated, would formalise collaboration, enhance community advocacy efforts, and support research-driven improvements in health insurance coverage in the State.

‎The Bayelsa State Chapter appreciates the warm reception accorded by BHIA leadership and reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote equitable access to healthcare and strengthen the State’s health system.
