Pathology Department Sets New Pace with Innovative Reforms to Boost Efficiency and Accountability

The Department of Pathology at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has embarked on a transformative journey toward institutional excellence with the introduction of strategic reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, accountability, and overall service delivery.

This development was unveiled on April 16, 2026, during a well-attended presentation that engaged the hospital’s management and staff. The session, led by the Head of Department, Dr. David Ushie, alongside his team, highlighted a renewed vision focused on strengthening operational effectiveness within the department and in line with the 4R mantra of the Chief Medical Director.

A key highlight of the reform initiative was the formal introduction of a clock-in, clock-out system for all staff of the department amongst others. This measure is designed to promote accountability, ensure prompt response to laboratory demands, and instill a heightened sense of responsibility in handling diagnostic processes . Furthermore, the system will support structured daily reporting, reduce operational redundancies, and significantly improve workflow efficiency.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, represented by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Innocent Abang, commended the department for its proactive and forward-looking approach. He described the clock-in system as a sustainable and progressive initiative, while encouraging staff to transcend routine administrative functions and embrace purposeful leadership in their respective roles.

In their separate remarks, the Director of Administration and other senior Consultants praised the Head of Department for his dedication, vision, and impactful leadership since assuming office.
They urged all staff members to remain committed, proactive, and align with the hospital’s mission of delivering excellence in healthcare services, noting that such reforms are instrumental in driving meaningful and lasting improvements.
