Birthday Wishes to our Exceptional Chief Medical Director

On this special day, we join countless hearts within and beyond the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) community to celebrate a visionary leader, a distinguished administrator, and a man of uncommon dedication. Happy Birthday to our esteemed Chief Medical Director.
Today is more than a personal milestone; it is a celebration of purposeful leadership, unwavering commitment, and a legacy in active formation. Your tenure as CMD has been marked by clarity of vision and a deep sense of mission one firmly rooted in restoring the lost glory of UCTH and repositioning the hospital to stand proudly among other leading tertiary health institutions across Nigeria.

Your passion for excellence is evident in every stride the hospital has taken under your leadership. Through strategic planning, disciplined ex*****on, and an unrelenting drive for improvement, you have steered UCTH toward enhanced service delivery, ensuring that patient care remains humane, timely, and of the highest possible standard. The acquisition of essential and state-of-the-art medical equipment under your watch has not only strengthened clinical outcomes but has also renewed staff confidence and institutional credibility.

Beyond service delivery, your commitment to research and academic advancement continues to elevate the hospital’s profile as a true teaching and research institution. By encouraging innovation, supporting training, and fostering a culture of inquiry, you have laid a solid foundation for UCTH to contribute meaningfully to national health discourse and medical advancement.

Equally remarkable is your attention to the aesthetic transformation of the hospital environment. You have demonstrated that healthcare is not only about treatment but also about dignity, comfort, and healing spaces. The improved outlook and ambience of the hospital reflect your belief that patients, staff, and visitors alike deserve an environment that inspires hope, confidence, and wellbeing.
What truly sets you apart as an exceptional CMD is your ability to combine vision with action, authority with empathy, and leadership with service. You lead not merely by position, but by example, earning respect across professional, administrative, and community lines.

As you mark another year, we celebrate the progress made, the standards set, and the future you continue to shape. May this new year bring you renewed strength, wisdom, good health, and divine guidance to sustain the remarkable work you are doing. May your leadership journey be crowned with even greater achievements, and may UCTH continue to flourish under your steady and inspired hand.
Happy Birthday, Sir.
May your days be long, your impact enduring, and your legacy unmistakable.

REBUTTAL

The attention of the Corporate Affairs Department of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has been drawn to a mischievous publication purportedly issued by a blog named "Arewa Republic". In the said publication, the CMD UCTH purportedly addressed the press on the on-going allegations of rejection of a cadre of doctors based on their tribe.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Chief Medical Director UCTH has granted no interviews, issued no statements nor addressed any set of pressmen on these allegations. We urge mischief makers to please channel their energies to useful and productive ventures.

Thank you.

BREAKING BARRIERS IN PATIENT CARE:
UCTH RECORDS SUCCESSFULLY ENDOSCOPIC PEG INSERTION 👇👇👇👇.

Good News Sir🙏🏽

Yesterday, our team successfully performed percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (Pull-PEG) insertion .

The procedure was carried out on an ICU patient whose care had been delayed for two weeks due to the ongoing disruption in theatre services and who had been maintained on nasogastric tube feeding for approximately two months.

The PEG insertion was performed by Dr. Bassey and Dr. Miracle (Surgery), with endoscopic guidance provided by Dr. Asa and Dr. Eni (Gastroenterology). Nurse Benedicta and Nurse Ogbonna competently managed the endoscopic nursing support. An Anaesthetist was present as a precautionary measure, given that the patient was being managed in the ICU, although the procedure was successfully conducted under local anaesthesia.

This milestone represents a significant advancement in multidisciplinary care and service delivery at UCTH, particularly in ensuring timely nutritional support for critically ill patients despite prevailing service challenges.

The Endoscopy Unit is immensely grateful for all the support Sir🙏🏽

UCTH Honors an Icon: Professor (Mrs.) Hannah Bassey Faal MBBS, FWACS, FMCOph, DCEH, FRCOphth at 80

On Friday 5th December 2025, the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, under the visionary leadership of Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, joyfully celebrated a living legend Professor (Mrs.) Hannah Bassey Faal on her 80th birthday.

Prof. Faal is an internationally acclaimed ophthalmologist and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (since 1975). Her impact spans continents: she served as President of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) from 1999–2004, contributed immensely to the global Vision 2020 agenda, and has authored over 60 influential publications that continue to shape eye-care practice worldwide.

As part of the celebration, UCTH unveiled the newly remodeled Ophthalmology Department, now named in her honor. The surprise announcement moved her to tears as colleagues, friends, family, and staff gathered to applaud a lifetime of excellence, compassion, and service.

In her remarks, Prof. Faal expressed deep appreciation to UCTH Management for the recognition. She thanked her mentees in the department for keeping the vision alive and encouraged them to continue strive to become global health leaders. She also urged all hospital staff to give their best and reminded patients to take responsibility for their own health.

UCTH proudly celebrates Professor Hannah Bassey Faal, a trailblazer, a mentor, a global voice for better eye health, and a woman whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

A legend walks among us, and we honor her with gratitude and pride.

UCTH: The Re-invention of Hope

2019: Professor Ikpeme A. Ikpeme took over as Chief Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer. His first task was to lead a cleanup of the hospital environment.
He led from the front, climbing to clean fans and windows. Critics on social media responded, calling it “initial gra gra” and asserting that his tenure would bring no good.

Midway through his term, same critics pointed to those initial steps and accused him of ruining the hospital. His response? Steely silence, a deep faith in God, focus on the task at hand, and an unwavering commitment to his mantra: UCTH 2019-2027: Rebuild, Restore, Reboot,... Rebrand.

Fast forward to 2025, and before our very eyes, the new UCTH, under the leadership of Professor Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, is emerging. The expectations of the righteous have been met… and in some cases, exceeded.
