HEALTH TIPS TODAY:

THE POWER OF SELF-COMPASSION:

Forgiving and nurturing yourself can set the stage for better health, relationships, and general well-being.

Self-compassion yields a number of benefits, including lower levels of anxiety and depression.
Self-compassionate people recognize when they are suffering and are kind to themselves at these times, which reduces their anxiety and related depression.

While some people come by self-compassion naturally, others have to learn it. Luckily, it is a learnable skill.

Psychologists suggests that there are five ways to bring self-compassion into your life: via physical, mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual methods. They have proposed a variety of ways to foster self-compassion. Here are a few:

Comfort your body:
Eat something healthy. Lie down and rest your body. Massage your own neck, feet, or hands. Take a walk. Anything you can do to improve how you feel physically gives you a dose of self-compassion.

Write a letter to yourself: Describe a situation that caused you to feel pain (a breakup with a lover, a job loss, a poorly received presentation). Write a letter to yourself describing the situation without blaming anyone. Acknowledge your feelings.

Give yourself encouragement:
If something bad or painful happens to you, think of what you would say to a good friend if the same thing happened to him or her. Direct these compassionate responses toward yourself.

Practice mindfulness:
This is the nonjudgmental observation of your own thoughts, feelings, and actions, without trying to suppress or deny them. When you look in the mirror and don't like what you see, accept the bad with the good with a compassionate attitude.

HEALTH TIPS TODAY::

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION:

Erectile dysfunction (ED), once shrouded in secrecy, is now in the spotlight, thanks to high-profile advertisements for ED drugs like Cialis, Vi**ra, Levitra, and Stendra. Despite this greater awareness of ED, many men β€” and women β€” don’t have a real understanding of this condition. Here are four things to know about ED.

ED is often the result of diseases or conditions that become more common with age β€” or a side effect of the medications used to treat them. Other possible causes of ED include prostate surgery, stress, relationship problems, and depression.

Other age-related factors can affect a man’s ability to have an er****on β€” tissues become less elastic and nerve communication slows. But even these factors don’t explain many cases of ED.

Cardiovascular disease is a common cause of ED. Clogged arteries (atherosclerosis) affect not only the blood vessels of the heart, but those throughout the body as well. In fact, in up to 30% of men who see their doctors about ED, the condition is the first hint that they have cardiovascular disease.

Intriguing findings from the
Massachusetts Male Aging Study suggest there may be a natural ebb and flow to ED β€” that is, for some men, trouble with er****ons may occur, last for a significant amount of time, and then partly or fully disappear without treatment.

Regardless of the cause, ED often can be effectively addressed. For some men, simply losing weight may help. Others may need medications, and there are other options available as well.

Given the variety of therapies available, the possibility of finding the right solution is greater than ever.

HEALTH TIPS TODAY:

PSORIASIS:

Psoriasis is a noncontagious skin condition that produces red papules that merge together into plaques of thickened, scaling skin. The dry flakes of skin scales are thought to result from the excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells that is triggered by abnormal lymphocytes. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp.

Some people have such mild psoriasis (small, faint dry skin patches) that they may not even suspect that they have a medical skin condition. Others have very severe psoriasis where virtually their entire body is fully covered with thick, red, scaly skin.

Psoriasis is considered an incurable, long-term (chronic) skin condition. It has a variable course, periodically improving and worsening. It is not unusual for psoriasis to spontaneously clear for years and stay in remission. Many people note a worsening of their symptoms in the colder months.

Psoriasis affects all races and both s*xes. Although psoriasis can be seen in people of any age, from babies to seniors, most commonly patients are first diagnosed in their early adult years. The quality of life of patients with psoriasis is often diminished because of the appearance of their skin. Recently, it has become clear that people with psoriasis are more likely to have diabetes, high blood lipids, and heart disease. There are speculations as to how this might relate to their joint and skin inflammation. Caring for psoriasis takes medical teamwork.

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH - 5 THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY

WHO wants to be sick?
I can hear you say 'God forbids', or 'Sickness is not my portion'

Yes, no one wants to be sick, so let's consider these five things that you can do today to get on the road to better health.

After using the toilet.

Before and after treating a wound or a cut.
Before and after being with someone who is sick.
Before preparing, serving, or eating food.
After sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.
After touching an animal or animal waste
After handling garbage.

Do not take it for granted that you are cleaning your hands properly. Studies have shown that a large percentage of those who use public toilets do not wash their afterwards or do not wash them correctly.

USE A SAFE WATER SUPPLY
Ensure that all your drinking water used for brushing teeth, making ice, washing food and dishes or cooking comes from a safe source, such as an adequately treated public supply or sealed bottles from a reputable firm .
If there is any possibility that your piped supply has been contaminated, boil your water before use or treat it with an appropriate chemical product.
When using chemicals such as chlorine or water purifying tablets, follow the maker's directions carefully
Use quality water filters, if available and affordable.
Always store treated water in clean, covered containers to protect it from possible recontamination.
Ensure that any vessel used to take water from your stored supply, such as a ladle, is clean.
Handle water containers with hands and do not dip your hands or fingers into water used for drinking.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

The amount of sleep needed varies from person to person.
Most newborns sleep from 16-18 hours.

Maintaining the right balance of hormones that imperfect metabolism and weight.
Cardiovascular health.
Disease prevention.

Insufficient sleep has been linked to obesity, depression, heart diseases, diabetes, and traffic accidents. Surely these give us good reasons to want to get enough rest.

So, what can you do if you realize that you have a problem getting enough sleep?

Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day
Make your bedroom quiet, dark, relaxing, and neither too warm nor too cold.
Do not watch TV or use gadgets while in bed.

TREATABLE RISK FACTORS FOR STROKE (CONTINUED):

Heart disease:

Common heart disorders such as coronary artery disease, valve defects, irregular heart beat, and enlargement of one of the heart's chambers can result in blood clots that may break loose and block vessels in or leading to the brain.
The most common blood vessel disease, caused by the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, is called atherosclerosis.
Your doctor will treat your heart disease and may also prescribe medication, such as aspirin, to help prevent the formation of clots.
Your doctor may recommend surgery to clean out a clogged neck artery if you match a particular risk profile.
If you are over 50, medical scientists believe you and your doctor should make a decision about aspirin therapy. A doctor can evaluate your risk factors and help you decide if you will benefit from aspirin or other blood-thinning therapy.

Warning signs or history of stroke:

If you experience a TIA, get help at once. If you have had a stroke in the past, it's important to reduce your risk of a second stroke. Your brain helps you recover from a stroke by drawing on body systems that now do double duty. That means a second stroke can be twice as bad.

Diabetes:

You may think this disorder affects only the body's ability to use sugar, or glucose. But it also causes destructive changes in the blood vessels throughout the body, including the brain.
Also, if blood glucose levels are high at the time of a stroke, then brain damage is usually more severe and extensive than when blood glucose is well-controlled. Treating diabetes can delay the onset of complications that increase the risk of stroke.

WHAT ARE RIST FACTORS FOR A STROKE?

A risk factor is a condition or behavior that occurs more frequently in those who have, or are at greater risk of getting, a disease than in those who don't. Having a risk factor for stroke doesn't mean you'll have a stroke. On the other hand, not having a risk factor doesn't mean you'll avoid a stroke. But your risk of stroke grows as the number and severity of risk factors increases.

Stroke occurs in all age groups, in both s*xes, and in all races in every country.

WHAT ARE THE TREATABLE RISK FACTORS?

Some of the most important treatable risk factors for stroke are:

High blood pressure:

this is by far the most potent risk factor for stroke. If your blood pressure is high, you and your doctor need to work out an individual strategy to bring it down to the normal range.
Some ways that work: Maintain proper weight.
Avoid drugs known to raise blood pressure.
Cut down on salt.
Eat fruits and vegetables to increase potassium in your diet.
Exercise more.
Your doctor may prescribe medicines that help lower blood pressure. .
Controlling blood pressure will also help you avoid heart disease, diabetes, and kidney failure.

Cigarette smoking:

Cigarette smoking has been linked to the buildup of fatty substances in the carotid artery, the main neck artery supplying blood to the brain. Blockage of this artery is a leading cause of stroke.
Also, ni****ne raises blood pressure; carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen your blood can carry to the brain; and cigarette smoke makes your blood thicker and more likely to clot. Your doctor can recommend programs and medications that may help you quit smoking.
By quitting, at any age, you also reduce your risk of lung disease, heart disease, and a number of cancers including lung cancer.

WARNING SIGNS OF A STROKE:

Warning signs are clues your body sends that your brain is not receiving enough oxygen.

If you observe one or more of these signs of a stroke or "brain attack," don't wait, call a doctor.

# Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body

# Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

# Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes

# Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

# Sudden severe headache with no known cause

# Double vision, drowsiness, nausea or vomiting.

Sometimes the warning signs may last only a few moments and then disappear. These brief episodes, known as transient ischemic attacks or TIAs, are sometimes called "mini-strokes." Although brief, they identify an underlying serious condition that isn't going away without medical help. Unfortunately, since they clear up, many people ignore them. Don't. Heeding them can save your life.
