The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) Operational Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s blood safety system through strategic collaboration, capacity building, and research.

On Thursday, the Centre had the honour of receiving Dr. Muhammad Shakir Balogun, Resident Advisor of the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) under the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET).

Dr. Balogun was warmly welcomed by Dr. Aliyu Waziri, Head of the Operational Centre; Dr. Titilope Kolapo, Assistant Head of the Operational Centre; and Mr. Ahmed Gaji, Head of Laboratory. The visit centered on strengthening partnerships in key areas such as training, research, and technical collaboration to improve the efficiency and safety of the national blood system.

During the discussions, both teams emphasized the importance of continuous capacity building to ensure NBSA personnel and partners remain equipped with up-to-date skills and global best practices in blood safety and epidemiology. NBSA Launches Weekly Blood Awareness Programme on Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) has launched a new public enlightenment programme in collaboration with Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja. The initiative is part of the Agency’s ongoing efforts to promote voluntary blood donation, dispel myths surrounding blood transfusion, and raise awareness about the importance of a safe and sufficient blood supply in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The maiden edition of the live radio programme aired on Thursday, October 30, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., featuring Mr. Abdullahi O. Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity, and Hajiya Mariyatu Magaji Mu’azu, Head of Administration, as guest speakers.

During the one-hour session, the NBSA team discussed topics such as the benefits of voluntary blood donation, safety standards in blood collection and transfusion, and the life-saving importance of an adequate national blood supply. They also addressed common misconceptions that discourage people from donating, emphasizing that blood donation is a safe, simple, and selfless act that saves countless lives.

Mr. Haruna noted that one of the programme’s key goals is to sustain public engagement. “Radio remains one of the most effective ways to reach Nigerians across communities. Through this collaboration, we aim to spread accurate information and encourage a stronger culture of voluntary blood donation,” he said.

Hajiya Mariyatu Magaji Mu’azu reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring safe and sufficient blood for patients in need. She urged Nigerians to view blood donation as a civic responsibility and a simple act of saving lives.

The weekly programme will air every Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja, featuring NBSA experts discussing key issues such as donor recruitment, blood safety, transfusion practices, and the role of citizens in strengthening the national blood system.

NSCIA Urges Muslims to Donate Blood, Partners NBSA on Cancer Awareness and Health Advocacy

Faith-based collaboration seeks to deepen voluntary blood donation and health education across Nigeria

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has urged Muslims across the country to embrace voluntary blood donation as an act of faith, charity, and service to humanity.

The call came during a courtesy visit to the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) headquarters in Abuja by a delegation from the NSCIA, its implementing agency—the Education, Social and Health Mission (MESH)—and the 3AM Foundation. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration to promote voluntary blood donation and enhance cancer awareness nationwide.

Leading the delegation, the Chief Executive Officer of MESH, Dr. Aminu Hayatu, commended the NBSA for its sustained life-saving efforts and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to partner with the Agency in deepening community health outreach through faith-based advocacy and education.

Dr. Hayatu emphasized that blood donation aligns with Islamic teachings on compassion and saving lives, quoting the Qur’anic verse: “Whoever saves a life, it is as if he had saved all mankind” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:32). He described voluntary blood donation as a form of continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah), whose reward endures for as long as the donated blood sustains life.

He proposed that the NBSA and the Council jointly organize sensitization and training workshops for Imams and other religious leaders to equip them with accurate health information, enabling them to educate their congregations on the importance of blood donation. He further suggested producing testimonial videos featuring blood donors and recipients to inspire broader public participation.

In her remarks, Mrs. Oladipupo Khadijah of MESH highlighted the organization’s ongoing health education and cancer awareness programmes, particularly during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She noted that MESH focuses on prevention, early detection, and continuous education for women and communities, adding that partnership with NBSA would strengthen public understanding and participation in voluntary blood donation.

Also speaking, the Founder of the 3AM Foundation, Hajia Husaina Baba-Inna, commended the NBSA for its efforts to ensure the availability of safe and sufficient blood for Nigerians. She reaffirmed the Foundation’s readiness to sustain collaboration with the Agency, particularly in grassroots sensitization and donor-mobilization programmes.

In his response, the Director-General of the NBSA, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, expressed appreciation to the NSCIA, MESH, and 3AM Foundation for their visit and ongoing partnership. He acknowledged that one of the Agency’s major challenges remains Nigeria’s low rate of voluntary blood donation and emphasized that faith-based and humanitarian partnerships are crucial to expanding awareness and fostering a culture of regular blood donation.

Prof. Yuguda noted that the NBSA’s mandate—to ensure access to safe, quality, and adequate blood—aligns closely with the humanitarian and social objectives of the visiting organizations, especially in health advocacy and community engagement.

Quoting another Qur’anic verse, “And whoever relieves the hardship of a believer, Allah will relieve him of hardship on the Day of Resurrection” (Hadith, Sahih Muslim 2699), Dr. Hayatu said voluntary blood donation represents a tangible expression of compassion, unity, and social responsibility.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment by all parties to strengthen collaboration on cancer awareness, health education, and voluntary blood donation to ensure that safe and adequate blood is available for every Nigerian in need.

NBSA Hosts Two-Day Training Workshop for Hospital Transfusion Committee Members

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) today commenced a two-day training workshop for Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC) members across the country, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen blood transfusion safety and improve quality assurance in healthcare facilities nationwide.

The workshop, which is taking place in Abuja, brings together participants from federal, state, and private hospitals to build their capacity in ensuring the safe and effective use of blood and blood products within their respective institutions.

Declaring the workshop open, the Director of Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Jimoh Olawale Salaudeen, commended the NBSA for its leadership and sustained drive to improve transfusion safety standards across Nigeria. He emphasized the pivotal role of Hospital Transfusion Committees in promoting rational use of blood, ensuring compliance with national policies, and improving patient outcomes.

“Hospital Transfusion Committees are the backbone of safe blood practice. They ensure that every transfusion given is necessary, safe, and properly monitored,” Dr. Salaudeen stated, reaffirming the Ministry’s support for NBSA’s capacity-building initiatives.

In his welcome address, the Director General of the National Blood Service Agency, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, warmly welcomed participants and urged them to make the most of the training to strengthen transfusion services in their hospitals.

> “This training is not just an academic exercise — it is a call to action,” Prof. Yuguda said. “We expect participants to take these lessons back to their hospitals, implement them, and step down the knowledge to their teams. The ultimate goal is to improve the safety, efficiency, and quality of blood transfusion services across Nigeria.”

The workshop features technical presentations, group discussions, and experience-sharing sessions covering key areas such as:

Development and implementation of hospital transfusion policies

Effective monitoring of transfusion practices

Introduction to the Nigeria Haemovigilance System

Ensuring blood product safety

Continuous quality improvement in the transfusion chain

Participants — drawn from different regions of the country — are expected to cascade the training to other members of their Hospital Transfusion Committees and extend the knowledge to health professionals within their institutions.

The two-day workshop underscores the NBSA’s commitment to building a coordinated, efficient, and quality-driven blood transfusion system that meets national needs and aligns with global best practices.

NBSA Champions Voluntary Blood Donation as NYSC Corps Members Rise to the Call

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to saving lives through voluntary blood donation, as it recently concluded a two-day blood drive at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Kubwa, Abuja.

What began as a sensitization and mobilization campaign on day one transformed into a wave of compassion and civic responsibility on the second day, as hundreds of young corps members rolled up their sleeves to give the most precious gift of all — life. Their selfless action reinforces the vital role young Nigerians play in strengthening the nation’s blood supply chain.

Speaking at the close of the exercise, the NBSA team hailed the corps members for embodying the spirit of service, empathy, and patriotism. “Every unit of blood donated here will help save a life — a mother in labour, a child battling anaemia, or a victim of an accident. This is what nation-building looks like,” the team emphasized.

The Agency also extended heartfelt appreciation to the NYSC management for creating an enabling environment that encourages life-saving partnerships, reaffirming that the NBSA remains committed to deepening collaboration with the Scheme and other stakeholders to achieve 100% voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation across Nigeria.

Through initiatives like this, the NBSA continues to advocate for a culture of regular blood donation — a civic act that not only sustains the health system but also symbolizes unity, humanity, and hope for a healthier Nigeria.

NBSA DG, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Visits Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Seeks Continued Legislative Support for Safer Blood Services

The Director General of the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Professor Saleh Yuguda, yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, at his office in the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The visit, according to Professor Yuguda, was primarily to express profound appreciation to the Speaker for his pivotal role in sponsoring the bill that led to the establishment of the National Blood Service Agency — a landmark legislation that has redefined Nigeria’s approach to blood safety and transfusion services.

He commended Speaker Abbas for his visionary leadership and legislative foresight, noting that without his sponsorship and commitment, the agency might not have attained its present legal and institutional status. Professor Yuguda also used the occasion to solicit the Speaker’s continued support in driving the next phase of reforms within the NBSA, including enhanced funding, policy backing, and legislative frameworks that will further strengthen blood services across the country.

In their discussions, both leaders examined the critical importance of building a sustainable blood system that ensures the provision of safe, sufficient, and timely blood for patients in need. The DG highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to promote voluntary non-remunerated blood donation and to establish state and zonal centres to meet Nigeria’s growing transfusion needs.

Responding, Speaker Abbas expressed delight at the agency’s progress since its establishment and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the NBSA in its mission to save lives. He stressed that access to safe blood remains an essential component of public health and assured that the House would continue to back initiatives that strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties pledging closer collaboration between the legislature and the NBSA to promote a culture of voluntary blood donation and ensure that no Nigerian loses their life due to lack of safe blood.
