NBSA Strengthens Collaboration, Training, and Research for a Safer Blood Supply
The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) Operational Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s blood safety system through strategic collaboration, capacity building, and research.
On Thursday, the Centre had the honour of receiving Dr. Muhammad Shakir Balogun, Resident Advisor of the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) under the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET).
Dr. Balogun was warmly welcomed by Dr. Aliyu Waziri, Head of the Operational Centre; Dr. Titilope Kolapo, Assistant Head of the Operational Centre; and Mr. Ahmed Gaji, Head of Laboratory. The visit centered on strengthening partnerships in key areas such as training, research, and technical collaboration to improve the efficiency and safety of the national blood system.
During the discussions, both teams emphasized the importance of continuous capacity building to ensure NBSA personnel and partners remain equipped with up-to-date skills and global best practices in blood safety and epidemiology. They also highlighted the value of collaborative research as a foundation for innovation, data-driven decision-making, and sustained improvements in transfusion safety and blood management.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Waziri noted that partnerships with institutions like AFENET and NFELTP are vital to the Agency’s mission. “Our collaboration will help strengthen training, improve surveillance systems, and promote evidence-based approaches to safe blood services across Nigeria,” he said.
The engagement marked an important step toward building stronger institutional linkages between the NBSA and public health partners. It underscored a shared vision of improving Nigeria’s blood service delivery through knowledge exchange, applied research, and practical capacity development that will ultimately enhance patient care and public health outcomes nationwide.
