NBSA Announces 2025 National Blood Donor Day, Unveils Media-Focused Theme

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) has announced the commencement of activities for the 2025 National Blood Donor Day, scheduled to hold from December 5th to 12th, 2025, with a major symposium and media parley set for Monday, December 8th at Exclusive Serene Hotels, Abuja.

This year’s celebration will be held under the theme: “From Headlines to Lifelines: Media Advocacy for Voluntary Blood Donation,” with the campaign slogan, “Your Story Could Save a Life.” The theme underscores the pivotal role of the media in shaping public perception, enhancing awareness, and promoting a culture of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation across Nigeria.

According to the Agency, the 2025 commemoration will feature public awareness and sensitisation campaigns, as well as blood donation drives across multiple sites nationwide. The highlight of the event will be the Symposium and Media Parley, which aims to bring together media professionals, health advocates, development partners, and stakeholders to deepen national conversations around ethical reporting, lifesaving narratives, and public engagement on blood donation.

The NBSA emphasized that voluntary blood donors remain the backbone of safe transfusion services, noting that increased media advocacy is crucial to addressing Nigeria’s persistent gap in blood availability. The Agency called on journalists, content creators, and public advocates to join the movement in inspiring a stronger culture of altruistic blood donation.

Members of the public, media organizations, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the week-long activities.

NBSA Abuja Joins Continental Campaign for Red Saturday
African Countries Unite to Promote Voluntary Blood Donation on 29 November 2025

The National Blood Service Agency, Abuja Nigeria.(NBSA) has announced that it will join other African nations in the continental campaign known as Red Saturday, scheduled for 29 November 2025. The initiative is aimed at promoting voluntary blood donation and strengthening Africa’s blood supply systems.

Red Saturday is a coordinated effort across the continent to raise awareness about the urgent need for safe, voluntary blood donation. The campaign, themed “One day. One continent. One purpose,” brings together governments, health institutions, and citizens with a shared commitment to saving lives.

According to NBSA Abuja, Red Saturday is not just another blood drive but a powerful symbol of African solidarity and collective responsibility. The Agency highlighted that voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation remains the safest and most reliable source of blood for patients.

NBSA also reiterated that blood is needed every day — for surgeries, childbirth complications, medical conditions such as anaemia and cancer, and unforeseen emergencies. The Agency stressed that new and regular donors are essential to maintaining a sufficient national blood supply.

As part of its participation, NBSA Abuja will mobilise communities across the FCT, engage stakeholders, and encourage eligible citizens to donate blood in support of the continent-wide cause. The Agency believes that Red Saturday will inspire thousands of first-time donors and reinforce the culture of voluntary donation in Nigeria.

“When Africa stands together, lives are saved, hope is restored, and our continent grows stronger,” the Agency stated.

NBSA is calling on Nigerians to turn out in large numbers on Saturday, 29 November 2025, to donate blood and support the lifesaving campaign.

Together, we are Red Saturday.

NBSA Operation Centre Abuja Hosts Two-Day Training on Extended Rh Typing

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Operation Centre Abuja, has held a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at improving the accuracy and safety of blood transfusion services across the Federal Capital Territory. The training, conducted on November 12th and 13th, 2025, focused on Extended Rh Typing—an advanced blood grouping method essential for safer transfusion outcomes.

Medical laboratory scientists from major Abuja hospitals, including National Hospital Abuja, FMC Jabi, Nizamiye Hospital, Wuse General Hospital, and the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), participated in the programme, underscoring stronger collaboration among healthcare institutions.

In his opening remarks, the Head of the NBSA Operation Centre, Dr. Aliyu Waziri, highlighted the importance of precise blood typing in improving patient safety and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening national standards.

The sessions were facilitated by Dr. Halima Ismail, Head of the NBSA Training School in Kano. Day One focused on Microtiter Plate (MTP) preparation and best practices for handling and storage, while Day Two covered anti-sera titration, cell preparation, and result interpretation, supported by hands-on demonstrations.

Extended Rh Typing goes beyond the standard RhD status by identifying additional antigens such as C, c, E, and e. This detailed testing is vital for patients requiring repeated transfusions, pregnant women at risk of alloimmunization, and managing hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Participants described the workshop as timely and valuable, noting that the skills gained will help strengthen transfusion safety in their facilities. The training forms part of NBSA’s broader efforts to standardize blood testing procedures and enhance the national blood safety system.

NBSA Strengthens Collaboration, Training, and Research for a Safer Blood Supply

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) Operational Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s blood safety system through strategic collaboration, capacity building, and research.

On Thursday, the Centre had the honour of receiving Dr. Muhammad Shakir Balogun, Resident Advisor of the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP) under the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET).

Dr. Balogun was warmly welcomed by Dr. Aliyu Waziri, Head of the Operational Centre; Dr. Titilope Kolapo, Assistant Head of the Operational Centre; and Mr. Ahmed Gaji, Head of Laboratory. The visit centered on strengthening partnerships in key areas such as training, research, and technical collaboration to improve the efficiency and safety of the national blood system.

During the discussions, both teams emphasized the importance of continuous capacity building to ensure NBSA personnel and partners remain equipped with up-to-date skills and global best practices in blood safety and epidemiology. They also highlighted the value of collaborative research as a foundation for innovation, data-driven decision-making, and sustained improvements in transfusion safety and blood management.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Waziri noted that partnerships with institutions like AFENET and NFELTP are vital to the Agency’s mission. “Our collaboration will help strengthen training, improve surveillance systems, and promote evidence-based approaches to safe blood services across Nigeria,” he said.

The engagement marked an important step toward building stronger institutional linkages between the NBSA and public health partners. It underscored a shared vision of improving Nigeria’s blood service delivery through knowledge exchange, applied research, and practical capacity development that will ultimately enhance patient care and public health outcomes nationwide.

NBSA Launches Weekly Blood Awareness Programme on Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) has launched a new public enlightenment programme in collaboration with Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja. The initiative is part of the Agency’s ongoing efforts to promote voluntary blood donation, dispel myths surrounding blood transfusion, and raise awareness about the importance of a safe and sufficient blood supply in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The maiden edition of the live radio programme aired on Thursday, October 30, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., featuring Mr. Abdullahi O. Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity, and Hajiya Mariyatu Magaji Mu’azu, Head of Administration, as guest speakers.

During the one-hour session, the NBSA team discussed topics such as the benefits of voluntary blood donation, safety standards in blood collection and transfusion, and the life-saving importance of an adequate national blood supply. They also addressed common misconceptions that discourage people from donating, emphasizing that blood donation is a safe, simple, and selfless act that saves countless lives.

Mr. Haruna noted that one of the programme’s key goals is to sustain public engagement. “Radio remains one of the most effective ways to reach Nigerians across communities. Through this collaboration, we aim to spread accurate information and encourage a stronger culture of voluntary blood donation,” he said.

Hajiya Mariyatu Magaji Mu’azu reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring safe and sufficient blood for patients in need. She urged Nigerians to view blood donation as a civic responsibility and a simple act of saving lives.

The weekly programme will air every Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Citizen FM 93.7 Abuja, featuring NBSA experts discussing key issues such as donor recruitment, blood safety, transfusion practices, and the role of citizens in strengthening the national blood system.

Through initiatives like this, the NBSA continues to build public trust, foster partnerships, and inspire a new generation of voluntary blood donors in Nigeria.
