In pregnant women, Packed Cell Volume (PCV), or hematocrit, is measured during pregnancy to monitor for anaemia, a common condition where the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced, often due to natural blood volume expansion (haemodilution) or iron deficiency. A lower PCV in pregnancy indicates that plasma volume has increased more than red blood cell mass.
