Hello Airdrie 🤍
Grateful to share a few highlights from my week.

This week wrapped up with the Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus in Edmonton, where we had important conversations around community safety, policing, and the role of technology in shaping safer cities.

Back in Airdrie, I had the privilege of attending two inspiring youth-led initiatives.

The Youth Legacy Graduation Program was a reminder of what happens when young people are equipped with the tools to grow, lead, and navigate conflict with intention. Hearing their dreams and aspirations was truly encouraging.

I also attended the Movement for Mental Health, organized by students of W.H. Croxford High School. Their efforts raised over $27,000 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, a powerful example of leadership, compassion, and action.

So proud of these young leaders. The future of our community is in thoughtful, capable hands.

Day One of the Spring 2026 Municipal Leaders’ Caucus was both insightful and thought-provoking. I had the opportunity to hear directly from Premier Danielle Smith, engage in dialogue with provincial ministers, and collaborate with municipal leaders from across Alberta on issues that shape the future of our communities.

One exercise that stood out was a powerful “jelly bean” simulation that helped us visualize the complex reality behind rising property taxes. It walked us through 15 years of growth statistics across the province, showing how population changes, inflation, reduced provincial funding, and downloaded costs from higher levels of government are creating increasing pressure on municipal budgets, including here in Airdrie.

Municipalities must balance their budgets while still providing the services, equipment, and infrastructure that keep our communities thriving. That’s why conversations like these matter.

I am deeply thankful for the support we have so far received from the provincial government and I remain committed to learning, collaborating, and working diligently with my Council colleagues and city administration to keep exploring practical solutions and opportunities for improved municipal funding, because building a strong and sustainable future for Airdrie requires thoughtful leadership and persistent advocacy.

Hello Airdrie, trust your week is going well.

Today, I had the opportunity to attend a Strategic Planning course for elected officials, and it was an incredibly valuable experience for me as a councillor serving our city.

Strategic planning is about looking beyond today and making thoughtful decisions that guide where our community is going in the future. This course strengthened my knowledge and skills in how municipalities plan effectively, set priorities, and ensure that decisions today support long-term growth and sustainability for our residents.

Another great part of the experience was connecting with councillors from different municipalities. It was a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss the unique challenges our communities face, and learn from the strategies other councils are using in their cities and towns.

Opportunities like this help ensure that I continue bringing informed perspectives and best practices to the work we do on council.

I’m grateful for the learning experience and excited to apply these insights as we continue working together to build a stronger future for our city.

I’ll bring updates about the 2026 Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus in the coming days.

As always, thank you for staying engaged.

Hello Airdrie,

It’s your favourite Councillor, Simi Obasan, bringing you highlights of the week.

As always, it’s been a very meaningful week.

On Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending the Airdrie Sport Summit and the Windwood WinterFest, and it was another reminder of how very active, strong, and connected our community is.

And then, on Monday, I attended a Speaker Series at the City Hall, where we discussed Airdrie’s evolving demographics and what that means for how we plan, grow, and serve our residents.

And Tuesday was Council Meeting day, which also happened to fall on St. Patrick’s Day, and we continued discussions and decision-making on important matters affecting our residents in Airdrie both now and into the future.

And throughout the rest of the week, I hve continued serving members of our community and surrounding communities through my law practice.

I would also like to take a moment to again congratulate our Muslim neighbours and wishing you a very happy Eid.

And I’d also like to invite you to come out tomorrow in support of the Francophone Community here in Airdrie, the AFVRA as they celebrate International Women’s Day here at Inspire Multipurpose Room J, starting at 12 PM.

J’aimerais vous voir venir soutenir notre communauté francophone d’Airdrie.

If you did not understand a word of what I just said, here’s a challenge to you to pick up a new language. It is so much fun knowing how to speak multiple languages.

Alright. I look forward to bringing you highlights again next week. Until then, please stay safe and have a very beautiful weekend.

Happy Eid Al - Fitr to our Muslim neighbours đź’™.
