In commemoration of World Pharmacists Day 2025, our Pharmacy Department organized a series of activities to celebrate the vital role pharmacists play in healthcare delivery.

The highlight of the celebration was a community outreach at Majidun Senior Grammar School, featuring sensitization on rational drug use and a career talk to inspire the next generation of pharmacists. Other activities included a presentation on Medication Errors at the Morbidity & Mortality Review Meeting, where healthcare professionals shared lessons and strategies to improve patient safety.

Within the hospital, pharmacists engaged patients and caregivers in clinic waiting areas, offering education on medication adherence, safe drug use, and the importance of consulting pharmacists as trusted healthcare partners.

This year’s theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” emphasizes their dedication, expertise, and essential contributions to building stronger and more sustainable health systems.

At a time when the world faces rising healthcare demands, economic uncertainty, antimicrobial resistance, and the impacts of climate change, pharmacists remain at the forefront of ensuring safe, cost-effective, and accessible care.

At General Hospital Ikorodu, our pharmacists go beyond dispensing medications - they embody the 9-Star Pharmacist roles: Teacher, Manager, Leader, Communicator, Decision-maker, Life-long learner, Researcher, Entrepreneur, and trusted Caregiver. From reducing medication errors to guiding patients on the proper use of drugs, their work has a lasting impact both within and beyond hospital walls.

We say a heartfelt thank you to our pharmacists for their unwavering commitment to healthier communities.

GH IKORODU CELEBRATES WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK

In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, General Hospital Ikorodu held a workshop at the Agbala Annex, bringing together pregnant women, nursing mothers, and women from all walks of life to promote the importance of breastfeeding for lifelong health and development.

This year’s theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” underscored the need for consistent community, workplace, and healthcare support to ensure that every mother has the resources and encouragement to breastfeed successfully.

The session featured enlightening talks by healthcare professionals including nurses, dietitians, and pediatric consultants, who emphasized that:

✅ Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding with appropriate complementary foods for up to two years and beyond, gives every infant the best possible start in life.

✅ Breast milk is safe, clean, and packed with nutrients, meeting an infant’s full needs in the early months and continuing to provide essential nourishment throughout the second year.

✅ Early initiation of breastfeeding - within 30 minutes of birth - not only protects newborns from infections and chronic diseases but also strengthens the mother-child bond and improves breastfeeding outcomes.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2025: LET’S BREAK IT DOWN!

In line with the 2025 global theme “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” General Hospital Ikorodu joined the world to raise awareness and take action!

The event kicked off with a road walk and community sensitization, drawing attention to the silent threat of hepatitis. This was followed by a health talk led by Dr. Yetunde Odusolu, Consultant Public Health Physician, who described Hepatitis B as a “silent killer” and emphasized the importance of liver protection.

Participants were encouraged to:
✅ Get screened
✅ Get vaccinated
✅ Avoid risky behaviours (e.g., unprotected s*x, sharing sharp objects, unscreened blood transfusion)
✅ Say no to excessive alcohol and unsafe traditional remedies
✅ Practice good hygiene to prevent Hepatitis A & E

The day also featured free hepatitis screening and vaccination, ensuring that we could take immediate steps toward prevention and protection.

Let’s keep breaking it down — with knowledge, action, and care.
Let’s end hepatitis together.

“You only have one liver. Protect it!”

• Addressing common problems encountered in newborns
