_Caesalpinia pulcherrima,_ commonly known as the Pride of Barbados and Peacock Flower. Among the Yoruba people, it goes by the delightful moniker, Eko Omode.

This botanical gem, from the Fabaceae-Caesalpinoideae family, showcases compound leaves with an ovate shape, an entire margin and an asymmetrical base, all on a smooth, glabrous surface. It also possesses a leguminous dehiscent fruit.

Originating from Asia and tropical America, and embraced worldwide for it's ornamental allure.
The plant harbors essential oils, unlocking a treasure trove of medicinal properties;
๐Ÿ€The alcohol extract possesses potent anti-ulcer and anti-inflammatory properties.

๐Ÿ€In Mexico, the green pods are boiled and eaten for their nutritional value. Meanwhile, in India, the seeds take on a different role as a traditional abortifacient.

๐Ÿ€The tea from it's leaves tackle a spectrum of ailments. From aiding flatulence to combating ulcer, hepatitis, diarrhea, dysentery, gastritis, and intestinal inflammation.

๐Ÿ€The bark and flowers contribute to healing as well, addressing uterine dysfunction with their therapeutic effect.
Beyond medicine, the tannins in the fruit and flowers are used as natural dyes for clothing.

The Ficus exasperata Vahl, commonly known as the Sandpaper Tree, is a captivating specimen belonging to the Moraceae family. Renowned for its unique sandpaper-like texture, this tree, known as "Ewe epin" in the Yoruba language, holds a myriad of uses and noteworthy constituents like saponins, sterols, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins and phlobatannins.

It's myriad of uses are;

1. Treating Intestinal Conditions:
Harnessing the power of Ficus exasperata, a decoction prepared from its barks and leaves has been employed for centuries to alleviate digestive ailments such as colic and indigestion.

2. Anti-Diarrheal Properties:
The tannins found within this remarkable tree possess potent anti-diarrheal properties, making it an effective solution for managing diarrhea.

3. Skin Infection Remedy:
Recognized for its formidable antibacterial attributes, Ficus exasperata plays a significant role in combating various skin infections.

4. Wound Treatment:
Utilizing the astringent and antimicrobial properties bestowed by its terpenoids, the leaves of Ficus exasperata are made into poultices, facilitating the treatment of wounds.

_Senna alata_ L., a member of the Fabaceae family, is a captivating plant that was previously known as Cassia alata. This remarkable herb boasts a variety of common names, each capturing a unique aspect of its nature; Candle Bush, derived from the plant's appearance when in
bloom, as the yellow flower spikes resemble candle flames, --Emperor's Candlesticks, another reference to the distinctive candle-like inflorescences, --Ringworm Bush, attributed to the traditional use of _Senna alata_ in various cultures for treating skin conditions, including ringworm and eczema.

This plant holds a special place in traditional medicine, with the Yoruba people referring to it as Asunwon Oyinbo. Fascinatingly, _Senna alata_ exhibits a phenomenon known as Lystinasty, where its leaves close in response to darkness due to chemical changes, particularly in auxins.

Named after Isaac Lawson, belonging to the Family Lythraceae

The _Lawsonia inermis_ L., commonly known as the Cypress Shrub, holds a special place in the realm of medicinal plants. Revered for its versatile uses, this shrub, also, commonly recognized as the Henna plant, and locally known as Laali among Yoruba people, has a rich history intertwined with cultural, cosmetic, and medicinal significance.

๐ŸŒฑRenowned for its reddish-brown dye, Lawsonia inermis has been a trusted companion for cosmetic purposes. Widely employed as a hair dye, it also finds its way into marriage ceremonies in Islam, enhancing the allure of body decorations.

๐ŸŒฑThe chemical constituent, Lawsone, is the plant's main constituent responsible for its dyeing properties. Apart from it's cosmetic use,, Lawsone also increases red blood cell affinity for oxygen, contributing to its intriguing medicinal properties.

Family: Malvaceae

The cotton used in textile production is obtained from a plant. *Do you know that this plant is a medicinal plant?*
Yeah, it is. This plant is commonly known as Cotton. To Yoruba, it is in igi owu. It originated in Peru. Its vast economic importance made it walk across many countries.

Gossypium barbadense is one of several species of cotton. It is in the mallow family (Malvaceae). Its chemical constituents are gossypol, alkaloids, triterpenes, flavonoids, and essential oil.

It's primarily cultivated for its high-quality fibers used in textile production. It contributes about approximately 5% of world fiber. While it is not typically known for extensive medicinal uses, some traditional medicine practices have utilized certain parts of the plant for various purposes.

Some of the uses are:
๐ŸŒฑThe seed paste is used for snake bite
๐ŸŒฑFlower decoction can be used to treat hepatitis.
๐ŸŒฑThe leaves are antipruritic, diuretic and hypotensive.
๐ŸŒฑA decoction of the leaves prepared with ethanolic solution can be used to treat skin infections.
๐ŸŒฑThe stem bark is used to strengthen the womb.
๐ŸŒฑThe root bark is used to treat difficult or irregular menstruation.

Other use:
๐ŸŒฑSeeds are edible and can be added to baking products.
๐ŸŒฑSeed oil can be used in salad, margarine, and frying.
