PDM Day 2: Afusat Ishiaq, a resilient woman from Amilegbe who rebuilt her life with the help of NRCS/IFRC. After losing part of her home to devastating floods, the cash voucher assistance of #77,000 allowed her to purchase materials to repair her room.

In the aftermath of the floods that struck Amilegbe, many lives were turned upside down, including that of Afusat Ishiaq. Her home faced severe damage, but she didn't lose hope. With a cash voucher assistance of #77,000 from NRCS/IFRC, she was able to buy iron sheets, cement, and doors to start rebuilding her life.

Today, on September 10, 2025, we had the privilege of visiting Afusat and her husband during the ongoing post-distribution monitoring exercise in flood-affected communities across Kwara State. The warmth in their smiles was infectious, and their joy radiated through the room, reminding us that with support, recovery is possible.

While the doors are yet to be fixed, the gratitude they expressed for the assistance received was deeply touching. It’s stories like Afusat's that inspire us to continue our mission of support and resilience.

NRCS Begins Post Distribution Monitoring in Flood-Affected Areas of Kwara State.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has commenced its Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM) process in Kwara State, focusing on three flood-affected communities: Mubo, Amilegbe, and Fangan, across two local government areas, Ilorin East and Moro. This initiative aims to assess the impact and effectiveness of the support provided to beneficiaries by NRCS in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Volunteers were deployed to administer questionnaires to beneficiaries using the Kobo Collect tool. This digital data collection method ensures efficient and accurate gathering of information from the beneficiaries regarding the support they received.

To ensure the PDM process is conducted effectively, Assistant Coordinator, Chioma from NRCS National Headquarters Abuja was on the ground to monitor the process. Her presence underscored the organization's commitment to ensuring that the monitoring exercise is carried out to high standards.

The PDM process is designed to collect feedback from beneficiaries on the support provided by NRCS/IFRC. This feedback is crucial for understanding the impact of the assistance, identifying areas of improvement, and informing future programming.

The PDM process will provide valuable insights into how the support provided by NRCS/IFRC has been utilized by the beneficiaries and its overall impact on their lives.

The data collected during the PDM will be instrumental in shaping future interventions by NRCS and its partners, ensuring that they are more targeted and effective. By conducting a thorough PDM, NRCS demonstrates its commitment to accountability and transparency in its operations, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively.

The NRCS's Post Distribution Monitoring process in Kwara State is a critical step in evaluating the effectiveness of its support to flood-affected communities. The insights gained from this exercise will be vital in enhancing future humanitarian responses.

Kpasha: A Cry for Hope Amidst the Waters

A Journey to Kpasha
Nestled in the heart of Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State lies Kpasha, a riverine community only accessible by a challenging hour-long boat journey from Lafiagi. Kpasha faces a significant challenge: recurring floods that threaten to drown its promise and potential.

An Isolated Existence
Kpasha remains starkly disconnected from the rest of the world. Its people are resilient, but their battle against the relentless floods is daunting. Isolated in their riverine existence, the community is devoid of basic infrastructure. Roads, healthcare facilities, and schools are luxuries Kpasha can only dream of. As the boat drew closer, it became painfully clear how the lack of government presence had left the community vulnerable and underserved. Each flood season brings more than water to Kpasha; it carries fear, uncertainty, and the constant struggle for survival.

A Voice of the People
In the heart of Kpasha, I met Abubakar Idris, a community leader whose wisdom and leadership have been the bedrock for his people. Abubakar's eyes bore the weight of years of witnessing his community endure hardships that shouldn't have been theirs alone to shoulder. "Kpasha is not just a village; it is our home, our past, and our future," Abubakar began, gesturing to the homes held precariously by the fragile banks of the river.

He shared stories of seasons when the floods took away the little they had, of children who longed for education but had never seen a classroom, and of the sick who had no choice but to endure their ailments due to the absence of medical care. "There is no government presence here," Abubakar attested solemnly, his voice steady yet imploring.

Abubakar s message was clear and heartfelt—a plea to well-meaning Nigerians, organizations, and philanthropists to rally support for Kpasha. He called for initiatives to build infrastructure, like schools and clinics, and for essential services such as clean water and electricity. "We ask not for charity," Abubakar clarified, "but for partnership and support, so we can build and sustain our community for future generations."

Kpasha's story is a reminder of the resilience and hope found in communities striving against the odds. Theirs is not just a plea but a call to action for supportive partnerships to create sustainable change.

Despite the challenges, the spirit of Kpasha remains unyielding. The journey to this riverine heartland serves as a call for intervention, a reminder of the disparity in access to basic human rights. Abubakar’s voice echoes the resilience of his people and their belief that with support, Kpasha can overcome its trials and secure a future where opportunity flows as freely as the waters that surround it.

Aisha's Silent Strength: A Journey into the Unknown. The Calm Before Courage

Aisha, the ever-energetic Red Cross volunteer from Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, known for her infectious cheerfulness and animated conversations, was noticeably silent as we embarked on our mission to the flood-affected riverine community. Our vessel was a boat—a necessity to reach the remote areas where disaster had struck, leaving families in desperate need of assistance. Typically a beacon of positive energy, Aisha's unusual calmness piqued our curiosity. The mission involved registering beneficiaries using Kobo Collect, a task we knew Aisha was familiar with, yet her silence persisted throughout our journey.

Our journey began amidst the gentle hum of the boat's engine as it cut through the waters. Normally, Aisha would have been chatting animatedly, sharing stories or planning activities for the day. But today, she sat quietly, her gaze fixed on the horizon, her hands clasped tightly together. The river, a vast expanse of tranquil water to most, seemed an intimidating voyage to her. It was soon revealed that this was her first time on a boat, and the myriad of emotions overwhelmed her.

The riverine community was vibrant and welcoming, yet had been battered by the floods. Our arrival was met with warmth, and we swiftly began working, document in hand, logging details of those in need. Even in this role, where Aisha would typically lead the proceedings with her vibrant personality, she remained subdued. The challenge of the day was not in the task at hand, but in the journey itself, a journey that held a profound fear of the unknown.

Once the day's work was done, and we were safely back on land, I gently inquired about her unusual demeanor. Aisha smiled sheepishly, the shadows of the day lifting slightly. "I've never been in a boat before," she confessed. "That was my first time, and honestly, I was terrified. Every minute on that boat felt like an eternity, a constant battle against the fear that today could be my last. I couldn't speak or cough, too afraid that any distraction might lead to disaster."

In her silence, there was a testament to her inner strength. Aisha's quiet resolve spoke volumes of her courage, her ability to confront a profound personal fear for the sake of helping others. For many, the journey might have been routine, but for Aisha, it was a bold leap into uncertainty, where each silent moment was filled with the sound of her heart's resilience.

Aisha’s experience highlights that even the most confident among us have fears—and confronting them can be a deeply silent, yet profoundly brave journey. Her story reminds us that courage isn't always loud; sometimes, it's the quiet resolve that pushes us beyond our comfort zones.

In the face of adversity, Aisha taught us that courage often wears a silent cloak and that true bravery can be found in the quietest of actions. Her journey was not just about the miles traversed on a boat but about navigating the depths of her own fears, emerging stronger and more resolute in her mission to serve those in need.
