FMC Jalingo Champions Multi-Sector Effort Against Breast Cancer
The Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo, Dr. Aisha Shehu Adamu, has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in combating breast cancer in Taraba State.
She made the call during the Taraba Pinktober 2025 Mega Rally and Town Hall Meeting, organized by the Nigeria Cancer Society, Taraba State Chapter, to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event, themed “The Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Management of Breast Cancer,” highlighted the importance of joint efforts in tackling the disease.
Represented by the Acting Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Kirim, Dr. Aisha reaffirmed FMC Jalingo’s commitment to the fight against cancer, noting that the hospital serves as a pilot site for the Tele-Oncology Programme, an innovation by Cancer Consciousness Initiative (CCI). She described the initiative as a “rebirth model for health system strengthening” that connects patients to specialized cancer care remotely.
She further commended the Cancer Consciousness Initiative and the Nigeria Cancer Society for their dedication to advocacy, awareness, and patient support. Dr. Aisha urged that the town hall meeting should serve not only as a dialogue platform but as a catalyst for collective action aimed at improving patient outcomes.
Speaking on “Tele-Oncology”, Dr. Hannatu Ayuba Usman, Consultant Oncologist at the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, applauded the FMC Jalingo Management for their unrelenting support in the fight against breast cancer. She explained that the Tele-Oncology Hub Programme offers renewed hope and survival opportunities for cancer patients.
The event also featured a panel discussion by medical experts, who stressed the importance of regular screening, early detection, and consistent follow-up visits for cancer patients.
A broad spectrum of stakeholders including health professionals, traditional rulers, and community leaders participated in the town hall meeting, reflecting the collective will to curb the growing threat of breast cancer in Taraba State.
