In the face of shrinking global health funding, innovation has become a necessity rather than an option. To ensure that no community is left behind, the African Union has directed Nigeria and Ethiopia to pilot the Nigeria Collaborative Action Strategy (NCAS) as part of efforts to enhance the effectiveness of health campaigns by integrating multiple campaign components rather than conducting them separately. Kano State is among the pilot states selected by the Federal Ministry of Health for the implementation of the NCAS in Nigeria.

A mass campaign was conducted in collaboration with HANDS Nigeria and other development partners, with the Onchocerciasis programme actively participating in the NCAS pilot. The Onchocerciasis activity was implemented in six out of the 44 LGAs of Kano State. HANDS Nigeria has been fully involved in the process, with funding support from Reaching the Last Mile (RLM) through Sightsavers. It is anticipated that the outcome of this collaborative effort will provide valuable insights for future integrated health campaigns and contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s health care delivery system.

Restoring Health. Renewing Dignity. Inspiring Gratitude.đź’™

In Kano State, the ongoing hydrocele surgery programme, funded by the FCDO through Sightsavers, and implemented by the Kano State Ministry of Health in collaboration with HANDS Nigeria, continues to transform lives and restore hope.

At the Wudil General Hospital, one of the centres where the surgeries take place, a remarkable moment unfolded as former beneficiaries Usman, Tumbow, Sani and Mohammed, whose health and dignity were restored in previous rounds, returned not as patients, but as ambassadors of gratitude.

They came to share their testimonies, encourage others, and celebrate the life-changing impact of the programme. This is more than surgery; it is the restoration of dignity, productivity, and confidence, a testament to what partnership and compassion can achieve.

With vital support from CBM International and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), HANDS has concluded a major Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) Livelihood Initiative across five LGAs in Katsina State Batagarawa, Kankia, Dutsin-ma, Malumfashi, and Musawa.

Through the distribution and redemption of poultry and livestock, 375 vulnerable households, including women and persons with disabilities now have the tools, training, and opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods and achieve food security.

This initiative not only uplifts families but also strengthens local economies and promotes inclusive growth.

We’re delighted to announce that HANDS has signed a new grant agreement with Plan International and Save the Children International!

Through the European Union–funded Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP), we will be advancing inclusive education and livelihoods in Nigeria.

Our work will span Kano, Jigawa, and Sokoto States, with a strong focus on ensuring that women, youth, and children with disabilities are meaningfully included in education and economic opportunities.

In Kano and Jigawa, HANDS will support schools and communities to break down barriers to learning, strengthen referral and support systems, and link learners to livelihood pathways.

In Sokoto, we will provide technical support through Disability Audits and a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) Survey, generating evidence to guide practical, adaptive solutions.

By combining these efforts, ABEP will help expand access to safe, flexible, and quality learning while opening doors for greater economic participation for people who are too often left behind.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the European Union, Plan International, and Save the Children International for their partnership in driving this important work. Together, we are making education accessible and meaningful for all.

Stay tuned as we share milestones, insights, and impact from communities across the three states.

Last week, the close-out ceremony of the project “Strengthening Access to Person-Centred Mental Healthcare for People with Neglected Tropical Diseases” marked a milestone in Takai LGA, Kano State.

More than treating leprosy, Buruli ulcer, and lymphatic filariasis, the project addressed the often overlooked mental health needs of affected persons, helping them overcome stigma, rebuild confidence, and reclaim their place in society.

Led by HANDS, with support from CBM Global Disability Inclusion, the Anesvad Foundation, the Kano State Government, and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the initiative has shown that true healing restores both body and mind, leaving behind a legacy of inclusion, resilience, and hope.

The SEECLEAR Project in Plateau State evolved from the successful Plateau Inclusive Project, which brought essential eye care services to underserved communities.

Building on this foundation, SEECLEAR is now deepening its impact by addressing the intersection of gender, disability, poverty, and health.

In August 2025, the project hosted a specialised training on Gender and Disability Inclusion in Plateau State. The training brought together health workers, programme officers, and community leaders to:
* Understand key concepts of gender equity and human rights;
* Promote the use of positive disability terminology;
* Explore the link between gender, disability, poverty, and health; and
* Develop practical strategies to integrate disability inclusion into eye health activities.

This marks another step in SEECLEAR’s mission to make eye health services in Plateau State not only accessible, but also equitable and inclusive for all people in their diversity.

Last week, we successfully completed a Basic Ponseti Clubfoot Training at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Nguru, Yobe State, Nigeria.

Another successful saturation in our mission to ensure no child lives with untreated clubfoot. By equipping more dedicated healthcare workers with the skills for early detection, treatment, and lifelong management, we are bringing quality care closer to families and transforming the future of one tiny foot at a time… 🌍💙

With Hope in Their Hearts and Medicine in Their Hands.
Meet Kadija (16) and Hajara (17), two determined girls changing lives in their Kano community.
As Community-Directed Distributors for the Reaching the Last Mile (RLM) project, they walk for hours under the sun, distributing medicine, educating families, and reaching even the most remote homes.

“We don’t do it for the money,” Hajara says. “We do it because our people need us.”

Together, they’ve helped protect hundreds from diseases like onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. However, their dream extends beyond medicine distribution; they aspire to become medical doctors.

“One day,” Kadija says, “we want to be the ones our people call when there’s a real emergency.”
They may be young, but their steps are bold. Their journey is just beginning, and it’s filled with hope, service, and a dream to heal even more.
