*ISSUES IN NURSING:*
i. Allowance to corper nurses.
ii. Why Kano's 6500 to corpers.
iii. The DNS of ATBUTH, Bauchi state.
_"For a house or country to be destroyed, some persons within that house or country must have played a role in bringing down their house or country."._ .... *Idreeserh*
My statement above is a clear replica of what has being happening in our dear profession in this country. Some fellow colleagues in the profession be it our leaders or fellow members are abetting some acts or doing those acts that is greatly affecting the profession and its professional. Their actions either affect the remuneration of nurses, or squashing their dreams in their quest for professional and personal development.
Earlier this evening, i made a post showing the collation of allowances being paid to nurses serving in their respective institution for their NYSC and specifically lot of dust was raised on the remuneration for nurses in kano state which is 6, 500 only and someone told me of the happenings at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi state.
*KANO'S 6500*
For the Kano state, the reason why 6, 500 is being given to our nurses who "are called to serve humanity" at the detriment of their emotional, psychological and physical well-being was because of the action of the then Director Nursing Service.
A meeting was called by the commissioner of Health where all cadres were represented by their director under the ministry of health and "unfortunately" the DNS was away from the ministry.
She was called and informed, well, seems she/he didn't received a "formal letter" informing her about it and i am sure some of us are in the know of how our leaders regard "letter or come down to their offices" before they act.
*Well, she was told and was aware but told the committee to decide on our case.*
Those present (pharm/Opt/Medlab/Rad/Physio) haggled on 70, 000 , it was beat down to 60, 000 and finally concluded on *30, 000/35, 000* for the Medical Doctors, no clear cut on theirs.
And, 7, 000 was given to us as we are *"called and ordained to serve humanity"* and you know the way government runs, even if you asked for 500, then wont give you 500 but give you a lesser amount. So, we were cut down, pegged and valued at * #6, 500 only.*
DNS gave them the go ahead to decide for us, she wasn't there and she couldn't or didn't fight it.
*Now, over to ATBUTH,*
Guess what, they don't consider nurse corpers but accept other cadres and the most painful aspect of it was, the DNS is mum about it.
The institution is understaffed. Instead of the DNS to look at this factor and call for acceptance of nurse corpers, no, she rather remain mute than to speak out.
😞😞😞😞😞
The painful truth i wanted to state here is *"If you have 100 nurses in a room and "better renumeration" is on the table for deliberation, less than -third of them would go for a higher value, more than two-third of them will go for little or almost nothing either because they have undervalued themselves or saying out a higher figure would sound ridiculous or because they don't see the need why nurses should earn that much at that stage because during their own stage they were paid little, so why should we be paid more while the rest would be indifferent, whether a better remuneration or not, to them, its still the same."*
Lastly, i am concluding by stating the fact that we can only make the profession better if and only if our leaders show course to better it and by involving the members, listen to them and sometimes ask them what they think about something and see if their advice will be good. Being proactive is what some of our leaders lack.
Our leaders act blind to see our plights and deaf to hear them. Nurses are suffering in this country, we are undervalued and yet we are expected to give our whole in discharging our responsibilities. *What if we crash one day?*
We are called to serve humanity but not at the detriment of our emotional, psychological and physical well being.
*Being passionate about this profession in Nigeria have 3 stages;*
At our early imprint in the profession and while in school, our passionate level was *HIGH* .
Later on, it keeps dwindling due to oppression, frustration, bad remuneration, toxic environment etc *MODERATE*
At the end, you don't even have, you just go to your place of work, render your care to the patients/client, and forget about the profession and its happening, you accept whatever is being churn out to you, you don't care if the profession is on fire or not, yours is to render care and collect your pay. At that moment , it's *LOW* .
We need to come together and task our leaders to do better and do more. This is the only profession we have and we are the only ones that will bring the needed changed.
*Thank you*
May God bless the Nursing profession
May God bless our leaders
May God bless the Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.
*Yours in the profession*
