Tramadol Crisis in Nigeria: The Reason for Increased Insecurity in the Country
What is Tramadol?
* Prescription drug
* Primarily a painkiller
* Can treat mild depression or premature ej*******on
* Tramadol is only legally available on prescription in Nigeria
* However, in practice, it is sold freely in pharmacies and at market stalls across the country
* Much of the Tramadol coming into Nigeria is made in India
1. Nigeria is said to be the biggest market for Tramadol in Africa.
2. It is estimated that over 4,000,000 people in Nigeria are misusing some form of opioid, including Tramadol.
3. In 2018, the Nigerian government banned the sale of Tramadol without a prescription and cracked down on the import of illegal opioids. However, seven years later, how are these drugs still getting into the country?
4. Since the country banned the import of the drug above the approved threshold of 100mg, more and more are still being smuggled into the country across borders.
5. According to the NDLEA report, in 2023, the agency seized opioids worth more than $100 million.
6. In Nigeria, the legal maximum dose of Tramadol for medical use is 100mg, but many of the seized imports contain much stronger pills.
7. The drug importers change the drug name and packaging, and even the chemical formula, to try to deceive the NDLEA.
8. In 2020, the former Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Col. Muhammad Abdullahi (Rtd), lamented that the drug “fuels insurgency in the north-east, because theatre commandants have testified to me that every Boko Haram camp they have overrun, they found paraphernalia of drug abuse, particularly Tramadol.”
