2nd Year Anniversary Celebration of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Dawanau 🎉 A New Era of Excellence in Mental Healthcare 🎉

On this remarkable day, 25th May 2025, we proudly celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Dawanau, Kano State, and the 1st anniversary since its official transition and upgrade by the Federal Government from the former Kano State-owned Psychiatric Hospital, Dawanau.

This milestone marks not just the passage of time, but a powerful transformation story from a once neglected facility to a now vibrant, functional, and ever-improving center of excellence in mental healthcare.

At the forefront of this remarkable journey is our pioneer Medical Director, Associate Professor Auwalu Sani Salihu, whose visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to service have redefined the landscape of psychiatric care in Northern Nigeria.

Key Achievements Under His Administration Include: Extensive renovation and remodeling of patients’ wards, ensuring comfort, dignity, and improved clinical outcomes, (General Outpatient Department) Unit, now fully equipped to deliver quality and prompt mental health services, complete upgrade of the administrative block, enhanced staff welfare programs, training, and professional development opportunities, a significant improvement in patients’ care and safety, with strengthened systems for mental health service delivery, initiation and completion of several capital projects that have turned the hospital into a beacon of hope for thousands.

We sincerely appreciate the dedication of our leadership, staff, and all stakeholders.

International Epilepsy Day!!

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, which are sudden, temporary disturbances in brain function. It is also a chronic condition that affects the brain's electrical activity, leading to seizures. These seizures can vary in severity, frequency, and impact on daily life.

Where does Epilepsy affect?
Epilepsy affects the brain, specifically the neurons and their connections. During a seizure, abnormal electrical activity disrupts normal brain function, leading to changes in behavior, sensation, or consciousness.

Myths and Conceptions
Unfortunately, epilepsy is often surrounded by myths and misconceptions:

1. Epilepsy is contagious; Reality: Epilepsy is not contagious and cannot be spread through touch, saliva, or other means.
2. People with epilepsy are mentally ill or have a low IQ; Reality: Epilepsy is a neurological condition, and people with epilepsy have normal intelligence and mental health.
3. Epilepsy is caused by evil spirits or curses; Reality: Epilepsy is a medical condition caused by genetic, environmental, or other factors.
4. People with epilepsy should avoid exercise or physical activity; Reality: Regular exercise can help people with epilepsy manage their condition and improve overall health.

Symptoms
Seizure symptoms can vary depending on the type of epilepsy and the individual:

1. Convulsions: Sudden, involuntary muscle contractions.
2. Loss of consciousness: Temporary loss of awareness or responsiveness.
3. Changes in behavior: Sudden, unusual behaviors, such as staring or wandering.
4. Sensory disturbances: Altered sensations, such as numbness, tingling, or hallucinations.

While there are lot of myths and misconception about Epilepsy, kindly take any Epileptic Patients to the nearest Hospital for early diagnosis, and treatment.
