SDGsACT-BUK and MAMA Initiative partnered to clean up Sabon Gari, Kano State last Saturday!

The two organizations worked together to mobilize volunteers to clean up the community. The World Cleanup Day movement was a powerful way to promote social cohesion and civic engagement. By working together to clean up our communities, we can build stronger relationships and create a more sense of shared responsibility for the environment.

The event was a great success, and both organizations are committed to continuing to work together to make Kano a cleaner and healthier place to live.

SDGsACT at Bayero University, Kano kicked off their public awareness campaign on campus last week, starting with the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Law!

The team was met with great enthusiasm, with many students eager to learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals and how they can get involved.

Here are a few of the questions that students asked:

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?
Why are they important?
How can I get involved in achieving the SDGs?
What are some of the challenges that we face in achieving the SDGs? and so on

The SDGsACT team was able to provide comprehensive and informative answers to all of these questions. They also encouraged students to get involved in the club's activities and to spread the word about the SDGs to their friends and family.

The team is already planning their next awareness event, so stay tuned for more updates!

Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
SDG 16 is about promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. People everywhere should be free of fear from all forms of violence and feel safe as they go about their lives whatever their ethnicity, faith or sexual orientation.
High levels of armed violence and insecurity have a destructive impact on a country’s development. Sexual violence, crime, exploitation and torture are prevalent where there is conflict or no rule of law. Governments, civil society and communities need to work together to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity. Strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights is key to this process, as is reducing the flow of illicit arms, combating corruption, and ensuring inclusive participation at all times.

Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land
SDG 15 aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
Terrestrial ecosystems provide a series of goods, raw materials for construction and energy, food and a series of ecosystem services including the capture of carbon, maintenance of soil quality, provision of habitat for biodiversity, maintenance of water quality, as well as regulation of water flow and erosion control, therefore contributing to reduce the risks of natural disasters such as floods and landslides, regulate climate and maintain the productivity of agricultural systems. Maintaining those ecosystems greatly support climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.
SDG 14 official wording is to "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development".
Oceans alleviate the impact of climate change and absorb around 23% of the annual emissions of various forms of carbons, the most concerning being carbon dioxide.[4] Because of the absorbed carbons, seawater becomes more acidic and its pH levels drops significantly.
A full 30 percent of marine habitats have been destroyed, and 30 percent of the world's fish stocks are over-exploited. Marine pollution has reached shocking levels; each minute, 15 tons of plastic are released into the oceans.

Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action
SDG 13 is about climate action and protecting Life. It intends to take urgent action in order to combat climate change and its impacts. The contributing countries to this SDG are making plans to prioritize food security and production, terrestrial and wetland ecosystems, freshwater resources, human health, and key economic sectors and services.
Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet. These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernize our infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.

DAY 12:
Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Goal 12 is about ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, which is key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations.
Unsustainable patterns of consumption and production are root causes of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. These crises, and related environmental degradation, threaten human well-being and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Governments and all citizens should work together to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and pollution, and shape a new circular economy.

Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

SDG 11 aims to renew and plan cities and other human settlements in a way that offers opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and green public spaces, while reducing resource use and environmental impact. The official mission of SDG 11 is to "Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable".

SDG 11 has 10 targets to be achieved, and this is being measured with 15 indicators. The seven "outcome targets" include safe and affordable housing, affordable and sustainable transport systems, inclusive and sustainable urbanization, protection of the world's cultural and natural heritage, reduction of the adverse effects of natural disasters, reduction of the environmental impacts of cities and to provide access to safe and inclusive green and public spaces. The three "means of achieving" targets include strong national and regional development planning, implementing policies for inclusion, resource efficiency, and disaster risk reduction in supporting the least developed countries in sustainable and resilient building.

DAY 10
Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequality.
Goal 10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, discrimination based on age, gender, ethnic or racial group, disability status, sexual orientation, migratory status, residence or other factors serve to disadvantage some individuals in many different and often invisible ways, throughout their lives. These patterns of inequality get passed on from generation to generation. Therefore, early interventions and investing in all children, especially the poorest and most marginalized, is central to breaking intergenerational poverty and inequality. Achieving Goal 10 and the SDGs more broadly requires a deliberate strategy to reach the furthest behind, first.

DAY 9
Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 9 aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
The motive of SDGS is primarily to promote economic growth, social development, and climate action. These goals are heavily dependent on investments in infrastructure, sustainable industrial development, as well as technological progress. Due to continuously changing global economics, as well as increasing inequalities, industrialization must occur in order for sustained growth. Quality accessible opportunities to all individuals is supported by innovation and resilient infrastructure as well. SDG 9 recognizes that humanity's ability to connect and communicate effectively, and develop our expertise in industry and technology is crucial in overcoming the many interlinked economic, social and environmental challenges.
