Case of the day:

This is a case of "dendritic ulcer" caused by Herpes virus, it is painless and can be seen only when is stained to look green as shown in the pictures.

Dendritic ulcer is easily treated if diagnosed properly, BUT!!, if treated with the commonly used anti-allergic eye drops containing steroids, it will become deeper and may perforate the globe!!😱

So, as a rule, if you feel pain or discomfort in "ONE" of your eyes, it must be checked with an ophthalmologist!

Does the "cataract" have to mature to do the surgery?

actually no!

Some cases have opacities are located in the back of the lens in a way that some patients can still have good vision in low light environment, but when the intensity of the light increases, like driving in bright sun light, the vision is reduced dramatically, so they cannot work or drive in bright light and this is very compromising. This type of cataract is referred to as "posterior subcapsular cataract".

With modern techniques of cataract surgery that we do, there is no need to wait in suffering until the cataract is "mature", but we can go ahead and do the surgery when this disease starts to annoy the patient or affects his life style.

This picture is for a patient who has this type of cataract and was treated successfully with Phaco Surgery in our hospital and she is enjoying great vision now.
