*Why “Eating Everything in Moderation” Doesn’t Really Work for People with Diabetes*
We’ve all heard it “
Just eat everything in moderation!”
Sounds reasonable, right?
But if you’re managing diabetes, that advice can actually be pretty unhelpful.
Here’s the thing: not all foods are created equal when it comes to carbohydrates.
Two foods might look like the same “moderate” portion, but your blood sugar would react completely differently to each one.
For example:
3 eggs have about 1.5 grams of carbohydrates.
1 cup of Beans has around 30–35 grams of carbs.
Half a cup of ice cream can have 40 grams or more.
So even if you’re eating “moderate” amounts of all three, your body’s blood sugar response will be very different each time.
For people with diabetes, what really matters is understanding carbohydrate content, glycemic impact, and how different foods affect your personal blood sugar readings — not just portion size or the idea of moderation.
The goal isn’t to label foods as “good” or “bad,” but to make informed choices based on your unique needs and daily carbohydrate goal, which should be 50g.
