🧬 Understanding Sickle Cell Inheritance

Sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning:

• You must inherit two sickle cell genes (SS) — one from each parent — to have sickle cell disease.

• If you inherit one sickle cell gene (S) and one normal gene (A), you have sickle cell trait (AS) — usually no symptoms, but you can pass the gene to your children.

Tips for managing sickle cell disorder from an experienced warriors’ mum.

• First, I will advice you get the sickle syrup and onion oil if you have not gotten them, I am not the producer and I am not paid to market this but before, my baby will be transfused almost twice in a year plus frequent hospital visit because of pains and fever.
But for the past two years, we started the syrup, he has never been transfused.
Give him religiously, that's be serious with the prescription, whenever he complains of anywhere increase it to three times daily.

• Then at least once in two/three months get, dawahul yaom and garlic oil for him/her to use even if he doesn't have any crisis.

• Give him/her his routine drugs daily, like folic acid, B Co, vitamin C, paludrin, please confirm with your doctor in case your child has any health history that may make the listed drugs not good for him/her or may add others.
• Make sure he/she sleeps early in a mosquito net especially if he/she doesn’t have time to sleep in the day time, this help him get enough rest and prevent him from being bitten by mosquito.

• He should drink more than enough water like his life depends on it, figure out what will make him/her drink excess water, like mine, he can't resists water in leather like sachet water because he likes playing with it and as such finish it without knowing.
• If you can give him/her good balance diet, do, but if you don't have the means, make sure he eats one egg daily or always cook with vegetables like ugwu and the likes.

• Be cautious of weather too, though for my own house, he always bath with warm water, the hotness of the water depends on the weather sha, like this period raining season, it is hotter water, not room temperature because mine is prone to cold.
• If he is in pains, try and give him phone or on cartoon for him to distract him from the pains and mix ORS in his water to take, softly massage the parts that pain him/her with good ointment , for me I use neurogesic ointment.
• Get thermometer at home and know how to use.
