How to Avoid Crisis Triggers in Sickle Cell Patients
A sickle cell crisis (pain crisis) happens when sickled red blood cells block blood flow. The goal is to prevent triggers that cause this blockage.
Here’s how to avoid them:
1. Avoid Dehydration
Dehydration is one of the biggest triggers.
✅ Drink plenty of water daily
✅ Carry a water bottle when going out.
❌ Avoid staying long in the sun without water.
2. Prevent Infections
Infections can quickly cause crisis.
✅ Treat fever immediately (go to hospital if temperature is high).
✅ Take all recommended vaccines.
✅ Wash hands regularly.
✅ Avoid people with serious infections.
Serious infections can lead to complications like Acute chest syndrome, which needs urgent treatment.
3. Avoid Extreme Cold or Heat
Sudden temperature changes can trigger pain.
✅ Dress warmly in cold weather.
✅ Avoid sleeping directly under strong fan/AC.
✅ Avoid excessive sun exposure.
4. Manage Stress
Emotional or physical stress can cause crisis.
✅ Get enough rest.
✅ Avoid overworking.
✅ Practice relaxation (deep breathing, light stretching).
5. Avoid Over-Exercise
Exercise is good, but too much can trigger crisis.
✅ Do light to moderate exercise.
❌ Avoid extreme sports or heavy physical labor.
6.Take Prescribed Medication Regularly
Religious use of Xickle Syrup medication and other routine prescribed drugs help reduce frequency of crises.
Never skip doses unless you are told to.
7. Regular Hospital Checkups
Routine monitoring helps prevent complications early.
Go to Hospital Immediately If:
*Severe chest pain
*Difficulty breathing
*High fever
*Severe body pain not relieved at home
*Sudden weakness or confusion
