Anemia is when the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells or enough haemoglobin.
Haemoglobin is the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen. So, the body isn’t getting enough oxygen.
Common causes
Low iron (the most common cause)
Lack of vitamins like B12 or folate
Blood loss (heavy periods, injury, ulcers)
Certain illnesses or infections
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause, but usually includes:
1. Iron-rich foods or iron tablets
Foods: spinach, beans, red meat, eggs, dates
Iron tablets if food isn’t enough
2. Vitamins
Vitamin B12 or folic acid supplements if those are low
3. Treating the cause
Treating bleeding, infections, or underlying diseases
4. Severe cases
Blood transfusion (only when very serious)
