Certain inherited diseases that involve production of abnormal hemoglobin may also result in hemolytic anaemia (excessive destruction of red blood cells). In the inherited disease sickle cell anemia, the hemoglobin in many of the red cells is abnormal, when these cells give up their oxygen to the tissues, they are transformed from normal disc shape to sickle shape and tend to tangled in masses that can block smaller blood vessels. When obstruction occurs, there may be severe joint swelling and pains, especially in the fingers, toes and abdominal pain which is known as abdominal crisis.
